Joshua Palmatier

Like so many of us, Joshua Palmatier started writing in his early teens and never managed to shake the habit. You probably know him for his fantasy trilogy (The Skewed Throne, The Cracked Throne, and The Vacant Throne), but he’s also making a name for himself as Benjamin Tate with a new trilogy (Well of Sorrows, Leaves of Flame, and the still-in-progress Breath of Heaven).

More recently, he’s started his own small press, Zombies Need Brains LLC, and is currently finishing up a KickStarter project to produce its first book, an anthology entitled Clockwork Universe: Steampunk Vs. Aliens. The project ends in just a few days, so after you read about Joshua’s most memorable meal, go back and click the link!

Here at EATING AUTHORS we like to make a point of featuring the most memorable meals not only of the super famous, multi award-winning authors that you’ve loved for years and years, but also the newcomers as well. Those authors who have just had their first novel published and show the bright potential to be that next generation of writers that will go on to become your absolute favorite. It’s in that spirit that I welcome this week’s guest, Michelle Lowery Combs, a self-described book blogger whose new YA novel, Heir to the Lamp, debuted last month from World Weaver Press. It’s the first book in a promised series called the Genie Chronicles, and rather than wallow in the more obvious jokes about “three wishes” and “lamp rubbing” let’s move on instead to the question of the week!

Down around Baltimore, MD this weekend is the S.F. Media convention known as Shore Leave. It’s a particularly rambunctious event this time around as they have both William Shatner and Brent Spiner appearing.

I went down yesterday to be part of the mass signing and book release of the third volume in the ReDeus shared universe series (ReDeus: Native Lands), which I posted about yesterday. That bit ran from 10:00 pm to midnight, and then we all adjourned to the bar for a couple hours until closing time. I drove home and managed to crawl into bed at about 4:00 a.m. today.

But that’s not what today’s post is about.

Prior to the 10:00 signing, there was a program item at 9:00 featuring Marco Palmieri and Greg Cox, two editors at Tor Books. They did a presentation of some recent and upcoming titles from Tor. Near the end, Marco made a little announcement. I had planned to hold off sharing this news publicly until such time as the ink on all the paperwork had dried, but apparently my editor and my agent agreed it was fine. So…

*** insert trumpets here ***

I am very pleased to announce that Tor Books is buying a novel from me. Despite my having published four books through Hadley Rille Books, a small press out of Kansas City, Tor considers me a “debut author.” That’s fine. And while I’ve been very pleased with the my relationship with Eric Reynolds of HRB, going from a small press to the largest publisher of SF in the country is a jump of one or more orders of magnitude in nearly all ways.

And because I’m now finishing up a book for a major publisher, I needed to have a proper agent to handle all the pesky details of contracts that weren’t based on a simple handshake. After far more choices than I probably deserve, I’m delighted to say I am now represented by John Silbersack of the Trident Media Group.

Or to put it another way: this changes everything in my life. It’s the opportunity I’ve been working toward for about two decades, and I’m grabbing hold of it with both hands!

The rest of 2013 is going to be a wild ride. The finished manuscript is due in New York at the beginning of February, and personally I’d like to get it in a month early. Other plans are being reviewed, reorganized, re-evaluated (and in some instances, rejected) as my priorities shift to put this front and center. So if I seem even busier and harder to get ahold of for the rest of the year, this is why.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and put my ass back in the chair and hammer out some more words.

Heading to Shore Leave 2013 Tomorrow

ReDeus: Native Lands

The car’s all gassed up and I just had the oil changed and the tire pressure checked, so I guess I’m ready for a trip. Tomorrow (Friday) morning I’ll be heading down toward Baltimore to spend the day at Shore Leave. As noted on my schedule page, although the convention runs through Sunday, I’ll only be present on Friday.

I have meetings planned for both lunch and dinner, and I’ve even managed to find myself on a panel this year at 8pm, but the main reason for my being there is the big Meet the Pros / Autograph Session that runs from 10:00 pm through midnight. That’s when I’ll be joining nine other authors for the debut of volume three of the ReDeus shared universe series, ReDeus: Native Lands (which by no mere coincidence includes my story “The Fourth Person”). This is my third appearance in ReDeus, and continues the adventures of retired professor Matlal Alejandro Garcia y Fuentes as he promotes the indigenous languages of Mexico and the history of the Aztec gods by writing pop songs for a teen superstar. The current story is set in Minnesota and focuses on the mythology of the Ojibwe’s spirits (with a bit of Norse mythology thrown in because, hey, it’s Minnesota!). There’s even a minor Ojibwe grammar lesson thrown in, just because.

So if you’re planning being at Shore Leave, I hope you’ll stop by my table during the signing. I’ll be happy to autograph anything you put in front of me. And naturally, I’ll have copies of my own books and some books from Paper Golem available as well. See you there!

Michael Jan Friedman

Rounding out the month of July here at EATING AUTHORS is Michael Jan Friedman, who in my opinion has written one of the best Klingon books in the grand and vast history of the hundreds of Star Trek novels that define such a huge segment of the media tie-in universe — and let’s just take a moment to acknowledge that he’s written several dozen of them! But that’s just one facet of Mike’s work.

With sixty-some books to his credit, Mike has landed on the New York Times Best Seller list eleven times. He’s written for comic books (nearly two hundred of them) and for television (an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, but I don’t hold that against him). He’s also one of the co-founders of Crazy 8 Press, and his contemporary fantasy, Fight The Gods, was one of their first releases back in 2011. More recently he’s been crafting mysteries set in the 21st century of the Aztec Empire of an alternate history. How’s that for mind-blowingly original?

Another year has ended. It’s been a pretty good one, all in all. But this next one… it is going to be beyond anything I have ever known. Some things have happened that I can’t quite go public with (probably in another week or so), but it’s fair to say that my entire life will be changed.

So do make a point to drop in and visit from time to time, as I’m going to have some great stories to tell. Oh my, yes!

I’m spending the day away (though not far) from home. In addition to being my birthday, today is the third and final full day of the Klingon Language Institute’s 20th annual conference, what we call the qep’a’ cha’maHDIch. Its been incredibly fun and tiring. We’ll round off the festivities tonight with a pizza party and cabaret (in Klingon, of course), which will go on into the wee hours of the morning. Check out time at our hotel is noon on Sunday, and by then we will scatter to the winds for another year.

Meanwhile, on th =e west coast, my friend Jay Lake is hosting his own wake. I’m sorry I can’t be there to share in the celebration of his life, but I’ve written up a little something for the book that is being presented to him today. If I had one birthday wish, it would be to give Jay more time, but that doesn’t appear to be likely to happen. We saw one another last in May at the Nebula Awards weekend, at which time I presented him with his own plush buffalito (whom Jay immediately named Harry).

Lake and Schoen, Nebs 2013

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go prepare for a day of discussions and wordplay in a fictional alien language. Highlights today will include a field trip to an area historical site, massive amounts of singing, and our version of the classic game show, Password, all in Klingon, of course.

Eating Authors: Howard Tayler

I don’t know about you, but today marks the start of a very exciting week for me, beginning with a trip up to New York to meet with literary agents and ending with my birthday on Saturday. Most of the middle portion will be spent in the company of Klingon speakers, who will be descending on Philadelphia from as far away as Australia for the 20th annual Klingon Language Conference (what we call the qep’a’ cha’maHDIch), and that’s especially exciting for me because it includes some of my favorite people in the world!

I tell you all of this by way of setting up a crude segue, as this week’s guest, Howard Tayler, also qualifies as one of my favorite people in the world. He’s the creative genius behind the webcomic space opera, Schlock Mercenary, a daily dose of fun that everyone should set up to load on their browser, phone, and/or tablet automatically. And it’s not just me that thinks so. Howard has nominations and wins in several categories from the Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards, as well as Hugo Award nominations for Best Graphic Story for each of the past five years! As if that weren’t enough fame for one man, you may also know him as one quarter of the team that produces the Hugo-nominated pod cast Writing Excuses, with Mary Robinette Kowal, Brandon Sanderson, and Dan Wells.

The other thing you need to know about Howard is he’s also a marketing genius. Recently, he ran a kickstarter campaign that didn’t simply meet its funding goal, its 2600 contributors did so eighty-five times over! And yes, his webcomic comes out daily and for free, but about once a year he gathers up all those strips and publishes them in a book (because sometimes you just can’t access the web, you know?). The latest bound volume, number nine, Schlock Mercenary: The Body Politic is available for pre-order, directly from the Tayler Corporation.

Gej Turns Four!

Forty-four years ago today, men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. I was a week shy of my tenth birthday.

Four years ago today, my dog Gej was born. Half Pug, Half Maltese, the story we were told was that some Pennsylvania Puppy Mill had been trying to create a new “designer breed.” They were not happy with the result and the fine folks at the Delaware Puppy Rescue acquired him. Some weeks later, he came home with me, restoring that brand of joy to my life that only a dog can bring.

Many of the people in my community of science fiction fans and professionals will be marking the anniversary of the moon landing today, and it’s well and good that they do. But I choose to celebrate the birth of my dog, and in recognition of Gej turning four years old, we both went out and got groomed.

Gej and me - Before
Gej and me - After

And so, in the spirit of pictures, or it didn’t happen, here are the before and after shots taken at the pet groomer’s.

I’ll point out that while Gej’s treatment cost more than twice mine, my barber did not include a full wash and dry, nor did she trim my nails, nor offer to shave my butt. Then again, today is Gej’s birthday, not mine.

We finished off our trip to the groomer by picking up Gej’s present, a double-boned, bacon-flavored, Nylabone DuraChew. Gej appears to like it very much.

Sigh. They grow up so fast.
