So this happened:

Hugo-nominee Nancy Fulda is one of the people who has been spending part of her time here at the Worldcon walking around with a plush buffalito on her shoulder and handing out postcards giving away my new novella “Barry’s Tale.” On the first day of the convention she had her buffalito (she named him Jared) with her at the gym, and it drew the attention of someone who as it turned out was working the Press Room for the convention. She invited Nancy to come and sign up, so that anyone seeking authors for interviews could in turn contact her.

Later that morning, Nancy found me, and together we went searching for the Press Room (not necessarily an easy thing to do in the vastness of the hotel) and we both signed up.

Yesterday, the Press Room called me and left a message. Twice actually. MTV wanted to interview me for their Geek program.

After a bit of phone tag I found myself in the big chair of the Interview Room (right behind the Press Room) and spent the next 45 minutes talking into the camera about Klingon, the Conroyverse, and Paper Golem.

I have no idea how much of that they’ll use, if any, and it may just come down to a two-second clip of me shouting “I want my MTV” in Klingon. Then again, they may run the URL for the novella as part of the video or include it on their website. That would be awesome.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to the Worldcon. Still a bit of programming left.

WSFS Small Press Award Nomination 2012

We interrupt my Worldcon-induced absence from this blog with the news that I apparently have been nominated for the WSFA Small Press Award, for my story “Yesterday’s Taste” which appeared in Transtories, edited by the late Colin Harvey, and published by Aeon Press, back in October 2011. You can download a free PDF of this story from my Freebies page.

As I’m sure you can imagine, I am merrily chuffed. A fine bit of news to receive in the midst of a Worldcon.

The winner will be announced at Capclave, which runs October 12-14, 2012.

Other nominees include:

“A Militant Peace” by David Klecha and Tobias S. Buckell.
“Flowers in the Shadow of the Garden” by Joanne Anderton.
“Lessons from a Clockwork Queen” by Megan Arkenberg.
“Sauerkraut Station” by Ferrett Steinmetz.
“The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees” by Lily Yu.
“The Patrician” by Tansy Rayner Roberts.
“What Ho, Automaton!” by Chris Dolley.

I’m flattered to see my work in such company, and I hope all of these authors will be coming to Capclave. I know I’ll be there.

Preparing for Chicon

I’ve got about forty-eight hours in which to work through the remaining thirty or so tasks on my TO DO list before it’s time to grab some sleep, wake up, throw my bags in the car, and head off to the airport for my flight to Chicago and the whirlwind of the qep’a’ and Chicon 7 that follows.

One of the items on that list involved packing up and shipping a box of plush buffalitos (prizes/giveaways at some of my Worldcon programming). As you can see, they did not want to go into the box.

The next book in the Amazing Conroy series, is actually a look back. Buffalito Buffet is a collection that gathers all the previously published stories (including those from venues long out of print and/or not available in the US) as well as a brand new novella set before the events of the story arc of the novels.

It will be coming out from Hadley Rille Books in the Fall.

I thought you might like to see what it’s going to look like:

Tomorrow is Sci-Fi Saturday in York, PA

Tomorrow morning I’m hitting the road early and traveling to York, PA where I will be part of the festivities at Sci-Fi Saturday at the York Emporium. Also on hand will be Best-Selling author of Enchanted, Alethea Kontis.

The doors open at ten o’clock, and the event runs until six. There’ll be readings, and lectures, a game show, and even a light saber demonstration (bring the kids!). I’ll go on stage for an hour at one o’clock and talk about the Amazing Conroy and probably a bit about Klingon, as well as upcoming projects at Paper Golem. Yes, I am attending this event in my capacity as a triple threat: author/publisher/klingonist!

All in all, it should be a great day! But, don’t take my word for it, check out this article from the The York Dispatch who have labeled it as their “weekly pick.”

Not that you need any more inducement to attend, but rumor has it that Barry will be on hand as well, eager to pose with fans and talk about his forthcoming eponymous novella.

TransStories

Last October, I told you about Transtories the anthology from Aeon Press edited by the late Colin Harvey. Among many other fine works of fiction, it contains my story, “Yesterday’s Tastes,” which is another tale in the ongoing saga of the Amazing Conroy.

I’m posting about it again because I recently heard from Aeon’s own Bob Neilson with the news that the electronic version of the anthology is now available. This is particularly exciting because the trade paperback version appears to be somewhat tricky to get your hands on outside of Ireland (though you can order it directly from the Aeon Press website by clicking here. Or, if you prefer your Trans-fiction to be composed of photons, you can follow this link to pick it up at Amazon.

I’m told there’s an ePub version available, but I haven’t heard yet where you can go to acquire a copy. If/when I find out, I’ll post a follow-up and let you know (and if I remember, I’ll include the link in a reply to this post as well).

I keep forgetting to mention it, but there’s a new addition over on the B.W.O.P. page.

Mexican Spanish

Professional translator Sabina Trigueros has very kindly provided a second Spanish version of “Buffalo Dogs,” this one in the Mexican (as opposed to the continental) idiom.

And yes, that is very cool!

Communing with Bison

As mentioned previously, I celebrated Doctoral Day last Monday by driving down through Delaware to the Colvine Bison Farm. The Collins family was very nice to me, and allowed me to wander around soaking up the buffalo vibes. Most of the bison they had there were fairly young, no more than a year or two old, and didn’t seem at all like the iconic buffalo that I had in my mind. If anything, they seemed “small.” Buffalo are supposed to be “massive.” Even so, some of these were coming in at half a ton.

I thought I’d been prepared for how narrow bison often look, but the actual experience was just weird, giving the animals an almost ghostly vibe as they stood there in the wind, like creatures in a funhouse mirror, or existing in only two and a third dimensions. Pictures don’t really capture this.

As I was preparing to leave, efforts were made for me to have my photo taken with Boom Boom. He’s the stud of the farm, and apparently more than a little cranky at times. For either or both of these reasons (I’m not really sure), he was off in his own little pasture. I’d only seen him from a distance (unlike the other animals who were curious about me, and came close when I stood by their fences). Boom Boom was lured over by filling a trough with corn, and as he approached he just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Yeah, this was what I’d come to see. This was a real, live, full-sized buffalo. Wow.

Best Doctoral Day ever!
