ChessieCon 2015

For the last few years, I’ve spent late November in Los Angeles, but I have different plans this year. Instead, hot on the heels of Thanksgiving, I’ll be traveling to Timonium, MD and making my first-ever visit to Chessiecon.

I’m looking forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces as well as many new ones. This convention weekend also represents the one month mark before the release of Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard, so I’m likely to be a little bit anxious.

In any case, here’s my tentative schedule of what I’ll be doing, where and when, at the convention:

Friday, November 27th
3:00 p.m. (Greenspring 2) The Klingon Guy Talks About Alien Languages
The title pretty much says it all. They’re giving me a room and an hour to answer your questions about the creation and use of alien languages in fiction and elswhere. Come on by for some linguistic fun and games.

Saturday, November 28th
10:00 a.m. (Greenspring 1) Reading
To no one’s surprise, I’ll like read from my forthcoming novel, Barsk

11:15 a.m. (Atrium) Signing
This is your chance to have me sign all the things! Seriously, all of them!

6:45 p.m. (Atrium) Mass Signing
Authors, artists, and musicians gather in one room for signing/book-selling/chatting with fans. This is your chance to have me sign all the things you didn’t have me sign earlier in the day!

Sunday, November 29th
10:00 a.m. (Chesapeake 6) KaffeeKlatch
Sign up for this intimate chat and ask me all the stuff. We’ll talk about Life and Death, Klingon, Hypnosis, Language, and anything else you want. And, if I can convince my publisher, there’ll even be prizes!

1:45 p.m. (Greenspring 1) How Much Do I Worry About My Own Canon?
Writing a series? Sure, you don’t want to get major things wrong, or contradict yourself. But are you creating a work of art for which you have to bend the rules sometimes—or even do so deliberately, for effect, as M. John Harrison does in ringing the changes in his Viriconium stories? Or is our increased awareness, through the internet, of fan readers, their concerns and reactions (and their attempts to write coherent fanfic) boxing us in? As major franchises mess with their Canon, what about us writers?

I have to say, that looks like a pretty good way for me to round out the Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you’ll come out and say “hi!”

See you at Chessiecon!

My 2015 New York Comic Con (NYCC) Schedule

NYCC

Let’s be real clear: Big conventions make me nervous. Just the thought of them.

The largest venues I’ve ever attended have been Worldcons, and those barely got above 5000 people in one place. But because the publisher of my forthcoming novel, Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard, has asked me to attend, on Thursday, October 8th, I’ll be at the Javitts Center in Manhattan to participate in New York Comic Con. I don’t know how many people will be there, no one does in advance, but I can tell you that last year’s attendance was estimated at 151,000 people. Right. That’s more than thirty times my Worldcon experience.

Ulp!

So, if you want to find me amidst such massive throngs, here’s where you need to be::

Thursday, October 8th
1:30 p.m. (Room 1A18) Tor: The Next Generation!
Tor Books celebrates 35 years of publishing quality science fiction and fantasy by some of the biggest names in genre today! But even Orson Scott Card and Brandon Sanderson were once unknowns. Meet 2015’s new authors and see what makes them tick in a game of “Would You Rather?”
with host John Scalzi (The End of All Things) and featuring Ilana C. Myer (Last Song Before Night), Seth Dickinson (The Traitor Baru Cormorant), Fran Wilde (Updraft), and me.

2:45 p.m. (Bookstore Hall 1-B) Tor: The Next Generation! panel signing
After we’ve amused and dazzled you with our responses to John Scalzi’s brutal questions, follow us on over to Bookstore Hall 1-B and we’ll sign stuff for you.
with Ilana C. Myer, Seth Dickinson, Fran Wilde, and me.

5:00 p.m. (Booth #2223) Tor Booth Signing
If you missed the earlier panel signing — or your just want more signage! — drop by the Tor Booth. I’ll be wielding my mighty Barsk stamp, showing off the Fant font I designed as part of the worldbuilding.
featuring Fran Wilde and me.

After the last book has been signed, I’ll sneak away, limping my way back to the train station to head home for a good night’s sleep. Because the following morning, I’m headed down to Capclave! That’s right, the fun just keeps on coming!

See you at NYCC!

Capclave

Assuming I survive my trip to Manhattan (and I don’t mean Kansas) the day before for the New York Comic Con, on Friday, October 9th, I’ll head down to the greater D.C. area (Gaithersburg, MD, to be precise) to take part once again in Capclave

Alas, my schedule will only allow me to be there on Friday and Saturday, but it should be a great trip all the same. Here’s where you’ll be able to find me and what I’ll be doing as my part of the convention:

Friday, October 9th
4:00 – 4:50 p.m. Your Day Job As Your Muse
SF writers who work for NASA have it easy. What about the rest of us? How does your day job influence what you write when you are off the clock? Do you base characters on coworkers? Turn daydreams of being the corporate hero into your creative works?

Saturday, October 10th
10:00 – 10:25 a.m. Reading
To no one’s surprise, I’ll probably read from my forthcoming novel, Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard, and if we reach critical mass, I’ll randomly give an Advanced Reader Copy of the book to some lucky attendee.

11:00 – 11:50 a.m. Discovering New Authors
How do readers find new good authors? At a time when Amazon has zillions of self-published and small press authors, how can you tell who is good? What new writers in the last five years would you recommend?

4:00 – 4:50 p.m. Linguistics In SF
What are some of the creative ways writers use language and linguistics in their fictions? How can language be used as a weapon or to unite different peoples? How can writers portray linguistic differences in a way that is not condescending?

And of course Reggie, my plush buffalito, will be with me — though you may not recognize him as I think he’ll be coming in disguise. So if you do spot Reggie, be sure to snap a selfie with him!

See you in Gaithersburg!

Baltimore Book Festival

After the chaos and joy and travail of transportation that marked last month’s Worldcon, I’ve been resting up and recovering. But all too soon I’ll be on the road again.

The first event in what is shaping up to be a busy autumn takes place in nearby Baltimore. From September 25 through the 27th, the city will be celebrating a book festival in their inner harbor with lots of great genre authors showing up (including such fine folks as Anatoly Belilovsky, Tobias Buckell, Brenda Clough, Scott Edelman, Anna Kashina, Emmie Mears, Sarah Pinsker, Cat Rambo, Alan Smale, Michael R. Underwood, and Fran Wilde).

There will be panels, readings, signings galore, and even a chance for you to meet and greet many of the authors.

I’ll only be in attendance on Saturday, the 26th. Here’s where you’ll be able to find me:

Saturday, September 26th
3:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Reading Group 4
Four intrepid readers will transport you to other planets and magical lands, all without you leaving the comfort of your chair.
With Cinda Chima, Kelly Harmon, and Justina Ireland.

4:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Signing
I’ll have a limited number of free Advanced Reader Copies of Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard to sign and give away, so come on by!
With Kelly Harmon, and Justina Ireland.

5:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Earl Grey, Hot: Future Food, Fantastical Food
From food pills to food printers to the latest in Elven lembas bread, the panelists will whet your appetite for fictional food.
With K Ceres, Diana Peterfreund, Cat Rambo, Bud Sparhawk, and Fran Wilde.

6:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Meet the Authors!
Rub elbows with your new favorite science fiction and fantasy authors at this annual event!

And of course all weekend long under the SFWA Tent, you’ll find lots of writers, local and regional, published and self-published authors, all talking about their books.

See you in Balitmore!

Patrick Swenson

One of the wonderful things that can happen at a Worldcon is that I’ll run into someone I haven’t seen in years, which is precisely the case with this week’s guest, Patrick Swenson. I found him at a table in the Dealers’ Room, and over a very quick chat (it was his table and he was shamelessly involved in acts of commerce) learned that he’d had a novel (The Ultra Thin Man) come out the previous summer, and indeed that the paperback version had been released only the month before. Naturally, I had to invite him to visit here on EATING AUTHORS.

If you’re a writer, you probably know Patrick because you sent him a submission. For fourteen years, he edited Talebones, a magazine published by the imprint he started in 2000, Fairwood Press. The magazine is gone, but the press continues, publishing books by some impressive authors including Michael Bishop, Ken Scholes, James Van Pelt, and the late Jay Lake.

In addition to running a small press, Patrick also facilitates one of the most popular writing escapes, the Rainforest Writers’ Retreat. Set on the shores of Lake Quinault, in the Quinault Rainforest, it’s an excuse to get away to paradise. Oh, and also to write. Check it out, but I’ll warn you now, the three 2016 sessions are already sold out. However, Patrick assures me you can sign up for a spot on the waiting list.

Fran Wilde

I’ve been looking forward to this week’s edition of EATING AUTHORS for months. Not just because Fran Wilde is another of the coterie of Philadelphia-based authors, nor because she’s branded as one of Tor Books’ Next Generation of SFF Authors, nor even because she writes the very popular blog Cooking the Books. No, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this installment because it gives me such delight to be able to tell you that her debut novel, Updraft, releases tomorrow!

Before going any further, some disambiguation is in order. This is not the Fran Wilde who is a New Zealand politician. Nor does she have a bridge named after her (don’t believe her if she tells you otherwise). On the other hand, that same-name former Wellington mayor surely lacks my guest’s cred as a Geek Mom, programmer, or writing instructor. And don’t get me started on her interest in food. It’s become schtick to put the two of us on Food Panels together when we’re at the same conventions.

The other thing I have to tell you is that while tomorrow’s release is her novel debut, it is not her writing debut. Other stories exist (both published and soon-to-be) in her Bone Universe, as well as short works in two other series (her Moon Universe and the Gem Universe), as well as a world she’s created for the folks Storium for their storyteller gaming world. Fran has ideas, and they’re too big to be contained in single stories or even individual novels.

The last thing you need to know is that somehow Fran has managed to alter all the world’s calendars. Tomorrow is not the first day of September. Rather, at least for 2015, the month is to be known as “Uptember.” Trust me, I’ve learned not to argue with her.

My pretty-much-final Sasquan (aka 74th WorldCon) Schedule

Sasquan

This summer I’ll be heading to glorious (or so the travel brochures asure me) Spokane, WA to partake in the 74th WorldCon, affectionately known as Sasquan.

And, in case you’d like to stalk me, here’s my full schedule:

Wednesday, August 19th
12:00 – 12:45 (Bays 111B) Comfort Reading
What do you read when you just want to relax? What books do you return to during busy times to unwind? What are your book equivalents of meatloaf and macaroni and cheese?
with Jason Hough, Louise Marley (M), Christie Meierz, and Jo Walton.

Thursday, August 20th
09:00 – 09:45 (Breezeway/Statue) Stroll with the Stars
A gentle morning stroll with some of your favorite authors, artists and editors. Meeting each morning at 9AM in the Breezeway between the INB Theater and the Convention Center (check your map), and returning in time for 10AM programming.
with David Gerrold, Vonda N. McIntyre, Cat Rambo, Stephen Segal, Stu Segal (M), and Tom Smith.

11:00 – 11:45 (401C) Klingon Language Workshop
An interactive (i.e., barking and spitting) session aimed at beginners. In 45 minutes I’ll run you through about 80% of Klingon grammar and leave you with the ability to speak and comprehend hundreds of well-formed sentences, including useful things to say throughout the rest of the convention!
this is my one-man show event, but any Klingon fans are welcome to help with crowd control, random and senseless martial discipline, and passing out instructional sheets.

12:30 – 13:00 (303B) Reading
The convention has generously given me 20 minutes to read to you. Come and listen to the first chapter of Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard. You too can be part of the groundswell for this shiny new book, and maybe even leave with an autographed copy of an ARC!
me plus an invocation of anthropomorphic elephants (and a few others, but hey, no pre-convention spoilers).

14:00 – 14:45 (202B-KK4) Kaffee Klatche
Somewhere there will be a sign-up sheet where you can put your name down to join me for light banter, inspiring pontification, rude jokes in Klingon, and the inevitable bloviation. Spaces are limited.
me and nine lucky souls!

Friday, August 21st
09:00 – 10:45 (Location is Secret!) Codex Worldcon Breakfast
As I try to do every year when I’m at the Worldcon, I’ll be attending the annual Codex Writers’ Breakfast. As of this writing, we’re looking at 60 participants. That’s a lot of waffles
The list of attendees is known to Codexii and their guests, sorry.

12:00 – 12:45 (Conference Theater 110) The Future of Food
Science fiction rarely discusses what people will eat in the future. Denny Zager and Rick Evans’ 1969 hit song, “In the Year 2525,” predicted “Everything you think, do and say is in the pill you took today.” Will the future really replace barbecue and burgers with capsules and protein drinks? How far can nutriceuticals go? Will we print our food in 3-D or carve it from Chicken Little? How are cuisines and tastes evolving? What drives food trends?
with Beth Cato, Scott Edelman, Amy Thomson, Fran Wilde.

13:00 – 13:45 (Exhibit Hall B) Autographing
Sasquan has thoughtfully set aside forty-five minutes for my annual ego-deflation. Come by and help me name the crickets.
with Aliette de Bodard, P. C. Hodgell, Richard Kadrey, Devon Monk, and Michelle Sagara.

Saturday, August 22nd
12:00 – 12:45 (Conference Theater 110) Alien Linguistics
Science fiction and fantasy often deals with alien or constructed languages. What makes a convincing language? What can we learn about creating such languages from the diversity of human languages?
with Annalee Flower Horne, David Peterson (M), Julia Smith, and Stanley Schmidt.

13:00 – 15:00 (300B) SFWA Business Meeting
It’s everyone’s favorite time to see how they make the sausage. Also, meet the new SFWA Board!
with a cast of dozens!

Sunday, August 23rd
09:00 – 09:45 (Breezeway/Statue) Stroll with the Stars
If you missed coming along on Thursday morning, this is your chance! Same route, different strollers. Meeting in the Breezeway between the INB Theater and the Convention Center (check your map), and returning in time for 10AM programming.
with Laura Anne Gilman, Joe Haldeman, Gay Haldeman, Stephen Segal, Stu Segal (M), and Steven Silver.

That’s pretty much it. At this point, it’s not clear if there will or will not be a San Marino Worldcon Bid Party (but if there is, it will be Saturday night — unless, um, it’s not).

See you in Richmond!

Eating Authors: Eric S. Raymond

Eric S. Raymond

Somewhere, it is Monday. In theory, if this has posted, I should have returned to Philadelphia after an evening flight from Chicago and the glory that was the 50th annual celebration known as the Nebula Awards Weekend.

At the time I write this, I don’t know the outcome of my award category, but if you’re a dreamer the odds-makers in Vegas probably offered a nice return for the longshot. As they say, it’s an honor just being nominated, and really that’s true. I’ve been there before, and it’s part of why I like to showcase each year’s Campbell Award nominees here on EATING AUTHORS, because win or lose, surely they are all worth taking a closer look at and their work deserves your attention.

I’ve crossed paths with this week’s guest numerous times over the years, owing to our mutual interest in SF and state of residence, and so I immediately recognized his name on the nomination list. But to most people, Eric S. Raymond (aka ESR) is perhaps famous as a leading advocate for open source software. And what makes his presence on this year’s list of Campbell nominees particularly intriguing is that his bibliography of SFF publications consists of only a single short story, “Sucker Punch,” which he’s described as

a solid, craftsmanlike first effort that delivers what its opening promises and suggests the author might be able to deliver quality work in the future

and has expressed his own doubts regarding his nomination, fearing his name on the ballot is more a reflection of his politics than his storytelling ability.

We’ll see how it all pans out later this summer. In the meantime, here are his thoughts on his most memorable meal.
