Getting Fitter

For 2010, Valerie and I had memberships to the Plymouth Meeting Community Center, which features a small workout room and a very nice pool. Although I continued to swim once or twice a week, most of our exercise came from using the elliptical machines in the workout room. The PMCC has three of these machines, with a limit of only 30 minutes of use if someone has signed up and is waiting. This became more and more of a problem for us. I was content to use a treadmill (of which there were about a dozen), but Valerie only wanted the elliptical. This frequently meant having to wait for a machine to free up, which potentially played havok with my getting-to-work-on-time schedule.

On the last day of 2010 we visited a nearby YMCA. It’s a brand new facility. It’s freaking huge! And they have about 20 ellipticals. The pool doesn’t have as many lanes, but the jacuzzi and sauna are better. Plus, they have more classes, and Valerie claims she’ll take some of them and get to socialize thereby. We’ll see.

We plonked down a year’s membership (sneaking in at the 2010 rates and having the “joining fee” waved, which made me very happy). And then we worked out, racing away on the ellipticals for the better part of an hour. A good way to end the year.

On Saturday morning, I was reminded of that adage “Begin as you intend to continue” and so while Valerie was at her morning meeting I went off to the gym. Since I had no time limit, I used an elliptical for an hour, doing a bit over four miles. Then I hit the pool for another quarter mile (I normally do half a mile, but that’s instead of walking). I was feeling beat. Later, back at home, I shoveled snow from the driveway to avoid the hazards of an icey drive when the snowmelt refroze. And still later, I took Gej for a walk. Ooof. Too much exertion for this Lawrence in one day.

Sunday I rested.

Today, I hit the gym hard, going a bit over an hour and putting in four miles on the elliptical before heading to work from there. We’ll see how long I can keep this up. As my endurance builds and my weight declines, I’m hoping I can get back to my personal best of a few years ago and manage five miles in an hour.

I’ll help you learn Klingon in 2011 #tlh #tlhIngan

Perhaps I’m crazy (chaq jImaw’), but I’m embarking on a new project for 2011.

My intention is to post a short audio lesson about Klingon every day at dawn (which is to say, sunrise here in the greater Philadelphia area). Each bit should run between three and five minutes, with a different theme each day of the week.

If you follow along, little by little, you’ll pick up everything you need to know to speak Klingon.

If you’ve been putting it off, if you’ve been telling yourself there’s just no way, then this is your chance. Make 2011 the year you learn Klingon. The new year is just around the corner, and I’m doing all the heavy lifting for you, all you have to do is click on each day’s link and listen. And you don’t even have to do it at dawn; you can sleep in and still get full credit.

Of course, it wouldn’t hurt for you to order a copy of The Klingon Dictionary. Trust me, you’re going to want one.

See you in the new year!

The past week

Last Saturday’s visit to DC delighted! The performance of Richard III had a techno-urban twist to it (machine-pistols will do that, I suppose) which oddly worked quite well. Afterwards, back at the hotel, Marc Okrand came by for drinks and then we were off to a Tapas restaurant that was running a special menu with a couple dozen different small plates and the option of paying a flat price and having as many of as many of them as you wanted. We all indulged. It was very Yum.

On the way back, the weather had warmed up from the 20’s and a light freezing rain pelted us. I don’t mind the freezing temps, but the dampness got into me and gifted me with a cold. The drive back on Sunday was unremarkable, but I was getting cloggy by the time we arrived and went straight to bed, which is pretty much where I stayed until Wednesday night, thereby missing several days of work.

Meanwhile, first readers were devouring the MS of Buffalito Contingency, finding little bits here and there for me to address (which I began doing on Wednesday and will finish up with this weekend).

Thursday I did an interview with a reporter from The Wall Street Journal regarding the Klingon production of A Christmas Carol. The reporter was going to go to the show yesterday (Friday), and I believe he met up with Marc Okrand there — Marc had mentioned at dinner last Saturday that he was going to be in Chicago on his to California and stopping in for the play — and we’re both mentioned in his article.

Friday I sent in some Klingon bits for an author doing a story for a forthcoming work from Pocket Books. That was fine and always nice to be able to do for a fellow writer. It was also the first day all week I got any exercise, going off to Pilates in the afternoon; the instructor thoroughly kicked my ass. Um, yay?

Today was house-cleaning day (as in, the house cleaner is coming, but we have to put everything away first, so she can clean), followed by errands to the post office and the bank, followed by a visit to my favorite Chinese Buffett where I finished reading Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother — which I highly recommend, by the way, and should do a separate post for. I’m still a little sub-par health-wise, and of course as I started feeling better Valerie took over the ailment and is now in congestion blah-land.

I anticipate sending the final MS off to my publisher as a Xmas gift, and then getting back to some seriously overdue projects for Paper Golem during the last week of the year. Also, I hope to lay in the first two weeks of a daily Klingon podcast I intend to start up in the new year.

And now you’re all caught up to date.

Saturday Morning Stuff

Got up at 5:30 this morning to finish packing and hit the road. After a stop for her FA meeting, Valerie and I are heading down to DC for a weekend getaway! We’ll be catching the Washington Shakespeare Company’s performance of Richard III this afternoon, followed by a delightful dinner with our friend Marc Okrand.

Gej meanwhile will be enjoying the attention of our house sitter, and doubtless planning all sorts of evil payback for our deserting him like this. Maybe next time we’ll take him with.

At the moment (while Valerie is at her meeting) I’m sitting in a McDonalds tapping into their wifi and trying out my new iPad. So far it’s pretty damn spiffy! I just downloaded Documents-To-Go and have begun some work on a new novel. Look at me, so productive.

Wait, what’s that you say? A new novel? Why, yes, yes that’s correct. Because yesterday I finished my edits on BUFFALITO CONTINGENCY!

Valerie will be reading through it (on the iPad, naturally) during the drive down to DC to help catch typos and to let me know if I’ve missed anything. Otherwise the plan is to send it off to the publisher next week. Happy Days!

Happy Hannukah to me!

Guess who just got a new iPad for Hannukah! 🙂

Now then, speaking as someone who’s never had an iPhone or an iTouch, what are some of the “must have” apps that I need to acquire for this device. Hmmm?

Help me out, folks. I need to hit the ground (and the iPad) running!

It’s the first of the month and I’ve just been notified that the electronic version of the December issue of Lightspeed Magazine has hit the virtual stands. And now the tale can be told…

Back around October 10th, Lightspeed Magazine nonfiction editor Andrea Kail contacted me to inquire if I might be interested in writing a piece about language for an upcoming issue. I was delighted at the idea, and told her “sure, but not until November at the earliest, I’m swamped. So, when do you need it?”

Andrea replied that she needed the piece within ten days, and that looked to be the end of things. I had a novel to finish. No way I could stop working on that for a short nonfiction article. Except… Andrea went on to explain that they liked to have a nonfiction piece to pair with a fiction piece. In this case, the fiction piece would be a reprint by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Yikes! Le Guin? Le Guin! That changed everything! Le Guin’s writing helped to shape and define my own writing. Le Guin’s language-centered fiction contributed significantly to my hanging out with Elvish speakers when I was a teen. Other reactions to Le Guin’s influence include my own fascination with languages, pursuing a PhD in psycholinguistics, and promoting Klingon for the past nineteen years.

How could I possibly pass on the chance to have a piece run alongside her fiction?

So I didn’t. I wrote the article. Then I rewrote it. Then I rewrote again, and it still didn’t work the way I wanted it to. Fortunatley my wife came along and pointed out that I was trying to cram a semester’s worth of content (hey, I used to be a psycholinguistics professor, ya know?) into about a thousand words. Ooops.

The final outcome is now up at Lightspeed Magazine ebook section. And I am a very pleased Lawrence.

Thank you, Lightspeed Magazine. Thank you very much.

Philcon 2010 – Day 1

I’m back home from Friday at Philcon. Very laid back and low key, and all the more enjoyable for it.

I started out having a snack in the restaurant, getting a bit of writing in while visiting with a Michael Oetting who is trying his hand at NaNoWriMo. Victoria Jansen came by just as I was explaining the concept of Meet Cute to Michael, and she provided some more examples and joined in the conversation. Tom Purdom then stopped by, and soon both of them were ordering food, and we yammered back and forth in a most agreeable fashion for quite some time.

Wandering around I met up with Klingon grammarian Mark Shoulson, who had come to the con with his wife and two children, all three of them first time attendees. And then later, enjoyed some conversation with another Klingon speaker, Dr. Mark Mandel.

I wound my way up to the con suite, which I don’t normally do, but this time it worked out well. I had several enjoyable discussions with lots of fans, and was soon joined by Hugo-winner Neil Clarke, new small press publisher Ian Randal Strock, and others who escape my memory because it’s well past my bedtime.

From the consuite I found my way back down to the main concourse and the “Meet the Pros” event already in progress. Chatted for a bit with Oz Drummond and Greg Frost, and later with Eslpeth (whose last name I can’t recall) and Ben Yalow. Ben is providing tremendous help with my plan to move the annual KLI conference from July to early August next year, so it will flow right into the WorldCon. More details on that later.

If you’re getting the impression that all I did today was flow from one conversation to the next, you’re pretty much right on the mark. Plenty of other people whom I haven’t mentioned but enjoyed talking with. Tomorrow will be more of the same, plus a reading and a panel (which I’d previously mis-reported as starting at 7pm, but which is actually at 8pm).]

Good night!
