Last Day of Renovation

Last night’s Hugo Awards ceremony was grand and glorious (and more than a little too long). Afterwards, Valerie and I went to that supreme soiree the Hugo Losers’ party, and I pretended it was 2010 and that I was in Melbourne. George R. R. Martin helped out in this by providing me a Hugo Loser ribbon, complete with a hot stamp of a marsupial of some kind hugging a Hugo. I spent the next several hours chatting with winners, losers, and other riff raff like me that had found their way to the party. I never did make it over to the Atlantis, or any where else, for any of the other festivities, but I did make it to bed by 1:30a.m.

This morning I’m awake and packed and about to head out the door. Here’s my schedule:

9:00 – Strolling with the Stars (I was strolled on the first day, and I’m strolling on the last day)

12:00 – Kaffee Klatsch (aka Diet Coke Extravaganza, even if I have to bring my own soda. It’s entirely possible that this could be just me sitting by myself, but I’m okay with that as it will be good for my ego)

2:00 – Stranger in a Strange Land after 50 Years (one last panel, seems appropriate to go out on Heinlein)

After that, I’m told a waiting car will whisk me away from the convention site and around the lake to a resort on the California where I shall sleep and read and recoup.

Thank you to everyone who made this such an enjoyable and productive convention!

It’s Hugo Day!

Day Four of the Worldcon has dawned, which means that a few hours from now a number of shiny rocketships (and one plaque) will be handed out to some very lucky and talented authors.

Valerie and I will be there to witness all the festivities, and Barry will be along too (sporting a black silk bow tie for the occasion).

Before any of that can happen though, I have the following scheduled activities:

10:00 – Writing Workshop, Section Q.
1:00 – SFWA Meeting (A-02).
5:00 – Reading from the new Conroy story (A-15).
6:15 – Dinner with an old friend and colleague.

In and amidst all of that, I’m hoping to slip in and attend one or more of the following readings by other authors:

2:00 – Lev Grossman (A-14).
3:00 – Nancy Kress (A-15).
3:30 – David Brin (A-14).
4:00 – Steven Gould (A-14).

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to begin my morning ablutions and come fully awake.

Meanwhile, here’s Barry explaining to Gail Carriger that he likes his tea with lemon and sugar:

Barry and Gail Carriger

See you at the Hugo Awards!

Checking in from the Worldcon

Day Three is about to start. Mind you, I’ve been here since Friday night (due to the KLI conference that preceded the Worldcon). My feet are very sore by the end of each day, but it’s all been glorious fun and well worth it.

In a bit over an hour I’ll be meeting up with about 40 members of Codex, the online writing community found by Luc Reid. We will have breakfast and tell many lies to one another I’m sure. After that, the rest of the day is a whirlwind of activity:

10:30 – Attend to Daniel Abraham’s reading (A-14).
12:00 – Iron Chef: Flash Fiction (A-03)
1:30 – Attend to Walter Jon Williams’s reading (A-15).
2:00 – Autographing at the SFWA Table (Dealers’ Room)
4:00 – Neologism and Linguicide (D-04)

That will be followed by dinner with an old friend, and then a round of parties that will probably carry me to midnight.

If you’re here at the convention, I hope to see you!

Meanwhile, here’s Barry to remind you that Winter is coming!

Barry says,

Hope to see you at the convention tomorrow!

Have a look at Cucurbital 2

A few months back Paper Golem opened to submissions for a new anthology. The idea was to give writers a collection and prompts and then see where they took them. I recycled a title from an earlier, limited release, and so this new anthology is called Cucurbital 2.

For this first volume the prompts were watermelon, turtle, and sex worker. The open reading period came and went, and in the end seven stories were selected, bringing the book came to an aesthetically pleasing 100 pages.

It went off to the printer. It came back. Copies have been sent off to various reviewers, and the release date is slated in the first week of November, with a “pre-launch” to take place in late October at Capclave, a smallish convention with a reputation of supporting both small presses and short fiction.

The trade paperback is priced at a mere ten dollars. There will also be a hardcover edition, as well as ePub and mobi formats available. I expect to open to pre-orders after returning the Worldcon.

One last bit: anyone buying a paper edition of the book (either TPB or HC) from the Paper Golem website can receive the ebook version at no additional charge. As Paper Golem moves into the realm of e-publishing this will be our policy. And, it will also apply retro-actively as we bring past titles online as ebooks (except where our authors have made other arrangements for their electronic rights).

Another Rite of Passage

A week ago I had my 52nd birthday. And some time in the past year I read through a copy of Fifty Things to Do When You Turn Fifty. One of the things on that list that I’d been putting off was a colonoscopy. So, last week, two years late, I met with the specialist and scheduled the procedure. That happened today, and I’m pleased to say it’s all, ahem, behind me now.

WANTED: WEBMASTER

I need to find a Webmaster familiar with WordPress to upgrade my website (current webmaster having gone AWOL due to “life”).

Skills should include setting up Conroyverse wiki and bibliography pages within WordPress.

The ideal candidate should be willing to work in exchange for Klingon lessons, free books (not necessarily limited to mine, as I’m thinking of purging much of my personal library), tuckerizations, long-winded pontifications, and/or gourmet meals (assuming I can convince my wife to produce same).

Unlike many other conventions, the programming folks at the Worldcon are usually pretty good about getting the “final” schedule out to participants weeks in advance. Mine came through last night and I present it to you below. Now, this is not to say there won’t be any changes (seriously, *stuff* happens), but it feels pretty solid:

Tuesday, August 16th:
12:00 – 23:00 Klingon Language for Newbies

Wednesday, August 17th
16:00 – 17:00 Autographing

Thursday, August 18th
09:00 – 10:00 Strolling with the Stars
13:00 – 15:00 Writers’ Workshop – Short Stories
17:00 – 18:00 An Introduction to Linguistics

Friday, August 19th
09:00 – 10:30 Codex Breakfast
12:00 – 13:00 Iron Chef: Flash Fiction (M)
16:00 – 17:00 Neologism and Linguicide (M)

Saturday, August 20th
10:00 – 12:00 Writers’ Workshop – Novels!
13:00 – 14:00 SFWA Meeting
17:00 – 17:30 Reading
20:00 – 22:00 Hugo Awards

Sunday, August 21st
09:00 – 10:00 Strolling with the Stars
12:00 – 13:00 Kaffeeklatsch
14:00 – 15:00 Fifty Years of Stranger in a Strange Land
15:01 – next several days Recovery Time at a Lake Tahoe resort!

Barry will be riding on my shoulder throughout most of the convention, and he would very much like you to stop and ask to have your photograph taken with him.

Also, I’m trying to think up inducements to ensure that people actually come to my Kaffeeklatsch (which I prefer to think of as a Diet Coke Extravaganza!) because I’ll be depressed if it’s just me and Barry. One possibility is to give away a copy of the new anthology Cucurbital 2, as I expect to have an advance copy (the book won’t actually be launch until late October). Perhaps a Tuckerization? Some other goodies. Other ideas of “bribes” to get people to show up when they’re worn out after a night of post-Hugo celebrating and are trying to check out of their hotel rooms?
