Sale to TRANSTORIES

I’m very pleased to announce that I’ve sold a brand new Amazing Conroy story. “Yesterday’s Taste” occurs before the events in either of the two novels, and involves Conroy (and Reggie) visiting the planet Bwill at the behest of a galactically famous food critic. Once there they encounter incredible meals, smelly aliens, mindwiping, explosions, industrial spying, fish poetry (?!), and much more, all in pursuit of the recipe for the legendary seven cheese cribble puff!

It’s good, clean, hypnotic fun, and if you’re a fan of the Amazing Conroy you will not be disappointed by this new tale. But, you will have a wait a bit. The anthology, Transtories, edited by Colin Harvey, won’t be released from Aeon Press until the Fall.

For the record, this counts as one of the faster acceptances I’ve ever had. I turned the finished story in via email at about 10pm on March 31st, and Colin sent me an email acceptance on the morning of April 3rd. Thanks, Colin!

Now that Lunacon is behind me, it’s time to start scheduling a few appearances to promote Buffalito Contingency, and towards that end I will be featured at the The Philadelphia Fantastic Authors and Editors Series on April 22nd, at 7:30pm.

The venue is the Moonstone Arts Center, (formerly known as Robin’s Bookstore), 108 S. 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA, conveniently located in Center City Philadelphia at the corner of 13th and Sansom Streets. As is the tradition with this series, the reading will be followed by an informal meal at a nearby restaurant (for those that are feeling peckish), usually Ted’s Montana Grill, which I happen to find slightly ironic.

The last few days have been a flurry of emails as Publisher Eric T. Reynolds and I have poked and prodded the final bits into place for the second novel in the Amazing Conroy series.

The book goes off to the printer this morning, so we’ll have copies in time for a splendid launch at Lunacon in 30 days.

Here’s the final cover, courtesy of artist Rachael Mayo and designer Melissa Lytton:

BUFFALITO CONTINGENCY

The Amazing Conroy has taken his hypnosis act beyond Human Space.

It should be show business as usual, except for the bigger-than-a-planet energy being that wants to study him, the rival aliens pulling him in opposite directions, his buffalito lapping up liquid gravity, and the small matter of a hypnotized ghost. . . Join the continuing adventures of the Amazing Conroy in Hugo-nominated Lawrence M. Schoen’s new novel: Buffalito Contingency.

I’m still going through edits, and I came across something that sparked a bit of cat waxing. Thus:

I have personal affection and high regard for the writing team of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Also, SRM Publisher very generously lent support and encouragement in the form of publishing my chapbooks when the Amazing Conroy was just starting out. And too, I’m a huge fan of the Liaden Universe books.

That’s why there’s a bottle of “blusharie” in a dream scene in my first novel, Buffalito Destiny.

It’s also why I’m telling you that there’s a reference to “advertency” in my new novel, Buffalito Contingency. Of course, if you haven’t read Lee & Miller’s Fledgling then this doesn’t make much sense. Nevermind.

Excuse me now, I need to get back to the edits before my publisher reads my blog and realizes I’ve been slacking off.

Icy Revisions

Wednesday is my day off from the Day Job, and today it looks like I’ll be spending it at home because freezing rain has left a very pretty and pretty dangerous layer of ice on everything.

This suits me just fine as last night my editor gifted me with his revision notes for Buffalito Contingency and that should keep me busy throughout the early part of the day. At least until the temperature warms up and some of the ice melts.

The rest of you, play safe!

I received an email from my publisher last night, and got my first look at the preliminary cover art for my forthcoming novel Bufalito Contingency. The brilliant Rachael Mayo has done it again. But don’t take my word for it,take a peak yourself:

BUFFALITO CONTINGENCY

Titling and such will likely be coming in a few days. I promise to post again when I have it.

And Rachael, if you’re reading this, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Hadley Rille BooksOne of the things I especially like about working with Eric T. Reynolds of Hadley Rille Books is my involvement in the cover design.

If I were an author for a “big” press, I doubt I’d have any say whatsoever. And we’ve all seen the covers of books where there’s a group of people who are supposed to be characters from the novel, but everything from physique to hair color to skin color is wrong, weapons and gear and clothing are anachronistic or simply out of character, or the particular assortment of people displayed never actually are all together anywhere in the damn book.

I don’t know if Eric does this for all his authors (and I hope I’m not getting him or me in trouble when I say this), but when it comes to the covers for my books he asks me what I’d like. Seriously. I work with him and the artist to come up with something that satisfies all of us. And not just at the beginning stage. I see and provide feedback on everything from the preliminary sketches on up to a discussion of typeface and color choice for the titling.

That’s insane! And don’t think that I’m not incredibly grateful for it.

Part of it is having an editor/publisher that you can talk with, honestly, openly. Thanks, Eric. Part of it is working with the same incredible artist for years now, through three publishers. Thanks, Rachael. Okay, and maybe part of it is that while researching hypnosis as part of writing about the Amazing Conroy I discovered the secrets of diabolical mind control and… wait… nevermind… let’s not go there.

The reason for all this gratitudinous  waxing — hey, it’s a perfectly cromulent new word, and if you use it you need to send me a dollar — is that I’ve just sent in my druthers for what the cover of my second novel (and third book) from HRB will look like. I think you’re going to love  it.
