I’ll be showing up on Friday afternoon and staying through the evening, then driving home late. I’ll be back on Saturday morning, and again be on site throughout the day and night. Here’s my official schedule:

Saturday
3:00pm – 4:00pm : (Executive Suite 623) Reading
Since they’ve given me so much time, I’ll be reading a longer piece, my story “The Wrestler and the Spearfisher” from January’s The Stories In Between. Trust me, this is unlike anything you’ve ever heard me read!

7:00pm – 8:00pm : (Plaza VII) Why The Theme Anthology
Why do we see so many anthologies on pre-chosen subjects
Eric Kotani (mod), Lawrence M. Schoen, Mike McPhail, Glenn Hauman, Danielle Ackley-McPhail

Brothers

Yesterday was the 14th anniversary of the end of my elder brother’s fight against cancer. That sounds a lot better than saying it’s been fourteen years since his death, but there you are. If I’ve done the math right, I guess he would have been forty at that time. I’ve fallen out of touch with his widow, and it’s been far too many years since I’ve spent any time with his daughter. Both live thousands of miles away in Portand, OR, not that I’m fishing for excuses or rationalizations.

I find myself thinking about my brother more and more as I get older, piling up birthdays that he never did. Fifty-one doesn’t seem old to me now that I’m here, and by extension forty feels almost youthful. He visits me quite regularly in my dreams. Half of the time I know he’s dead and remark on the fact in the dreams; half of the time I don’t.

Quite by coincidence, my eldest brother is in town this week, on business here in Philadelphia from distant southern California. He’s making time in his schedule, and we’ll get together on Wednesday.

The rest of my surviving family, my mother, sister, and nephews, are also all out west. I manage to get out to see them every few years. How odd that I see my deceased brother so much more often.

Drabblecast Doubleheader

I slip further into the maelstrom of audio fiction today with the release of two stories on the Drabblecast, episode 187.

The talented Phil Rossi (with a touch of assistance by the show’s host, Norm Sherman) does a fine job reading of both “A Fool’s Death” and “Pidgin” for the podcast. Norm talked me into doing a couple quick mp3s myself of author notes, and these follow each of the stories on the audio.

And a special shout out to Brent Holmes for the very cool artwork.

Dinner at Settlers Inn

Dinner was quite enjoyable. I broke from custom and started the meal with some alcohol (Bailey’s on ice). I didn’t find any of the menu’s starters particularly appealing, so instead I ordered a side of Ricotta Gnocchi. Then, for my entree, I went with their “field and stream” choice: Pecan Crusted Blooming Grove Trout, Butternut Sage Risotto, Pennsylvania Elk with Apple Cider Quince Sauce.

Yeah, it was tasty.

This morning we’re off to brunch at Torte Knox, which promises to be interesting. Then on to a little bit of window shopping, and then home.

Poconos Getaway

Valerie and I are ensconced at the Settlers Inn in scenic Hawley, PA (think Poconos). We have just eaten lunch in front of a roaring fire. I had boneless duck leg roulades, banana bread stuffing, butternut risotto, sherry dijon sauce, cranberry onion chutney. Seriously. 🙂

Gej at 15 (months that is)

Tonight I took Gej in for his rabies vaccination. While we were at the Vet, we also went ahead and did his parvo/distemper shot, and tested for Lyme and heart worm. The ride over had him nervous (he doesn’t ride in the car much), but he was quite stoic about the two injections and having blood drawn. He was much calmer on the ride home.

The doctor gave Gej a clean bill of health. He now weighs in at a hefty 17 lbs. My little puppy dog is growing up. You know, I never noticed before, he’s about the same color as the carpet in my office.

Barry’s Capclave Photos

I rarely remember to take photographs at conventions. Barry was good enough to remind me a couple times last weekend.

Here he is with Laura Anne Gilman. Laura Anne was showing off her fancy duds, so quite naturally Barry swooned.

On the way out of the convention, Barry insisted on one last photo op. Here he is with SMOF (and freshly married) Sarah Mitchell. Jealous groom Bill Lawhorn is just off camera.

Capclave that was

I always enjoy Capclave, and last weekend was no exception.

I arrived early on Friday, but despite this failed in my intention to meet up with Stephen Segal as planned. That was the only glitch to the weekend though. I was very lightly programmed (just a single panel and reading), which allowed me to attend readings by Eric Choi, Danny Birt, Tom Doyle, and Larry Hodges.

Other than my own, I only caught two panels. The first was about the Internet and Writers, and when enough was enough. Some good points provided by Jeff VanderMeer, and on target examples by Oz Drummon. I followed that up with the panel on Connie Willis and Boats. Never doubt it, Connie gives good panel. I had the privilege of being on two panels with her when she was GoH at LACon IV, but she’s best enjoyed from the audience.

I also talked with authors about Paper Golem, recruiting novellas for the next installment of ALEMBICAL, as well as a future single author collection. Time well spent. Other business involved a meeting with Laurie Mann regarding the logistics of moving my Klingon conference to Reno, and touching base with Mr. Shirt and Stacey McConnell about Lunacon (and going to their party to hold court).

My big concern for the convention was that I might succumb to all the candy and pastries available at parties and in the con suite, but it didn’t happen. The temptation was there, but I managed good meals, either breakfast in the hotel (which included very enjoyable conversations with the likes of Eric Choi, Oz Drummond, Laura Anne Gilman, and Tom Doyle), or heathy choices at the nearbye Fuddruckers (where I did not have any burgers).

My sincere thanks to everyone at Capclave for putting together another very enjoyable experience. You people rock!
