I won’t be heading up to Boston this weekend. Instead, beginning Friday afternoon, I’ll be hosting a small writers’ retreat in my home. Five other writers are coming in (some are flying in, from as far away as California) and we’ll be doing a series of critiques and novel plotting sessions.

Blue Bell Workshop
Buffalito Contingency Cover
The last few days have been a flurry of emails as Publisher Eric T. Reynolds and I have poked and prodded the final bits into place for the second novel in the Amazing Conroy series.
The book goes off to the printer this morning, so we’ll have copies in time for a splendid launch at Lunacon in 30 days.
Here’s the final cover, courtesy of artist Rachael Mayo and designer Melissa Lytton:

The Amazing Conroy has taken his hypnosis act beyond Human Space.
It should be show business as usual, except for the bigger-than-a-planet energy being that wants to study him, the rival aliens pulling him in opposite directions, his buffalito lapping up liquid gravity, and the small matter of a hypnotized ghost. . . Join the continuing adventures of the Amazing Conroy in Hugo-nominated Lawrence M. Schoen’s new novel: Buffalito Contingency.
Valentine’s Day 2011
Valerie and I started the day by heading off to the gym in separate cars (I go on to the DayJob from there). C’mon, what’s more romantic than two people working out on side-by-side ellipticals?
In other news, I have the final PDF proof of Buffalito Contingency to go over today, and by this evening the book will have been turned into the printer. This ensures we’ll have copies of at least the TPB for the big launch party at party at lunacon, now a mere 32 days away.
With luck, I should be able to show you the final cover tomorrow.
Meanwhile, one final reminder that the deadline for Nebula nominations is tomorrow. Vote early, vote often and vote for me.
Friday musings
Three things make a post:
1) I’ve just sent in a blurb for the next Worldcon progress report. It contains some details about the plan to move the Klingon Language Institute’s annual conference to the days leading up to Renovation. Our final day is the Tuesday before the Worldcon begins, and we’ll be in a room at the convention center and welcoming early arriving Renovation members to come by and get some introductory instruction in the warriors’ tongue (there will be a $10 registration fee for the day). More info will be coming soon to the Worldcon website.
2) Last year, I picked up a copy of a book with fifty things to do once you’ve hit fifty (which I had). One of the last items in the book is the suggestion to read the Torah. Huh. Curious idea, and probably long overdue. So I’ve ordered a copy (in English), and we’ll see how that goes.
3) I haven’t seen much in the way of comments lately , and I’m wondering if perhaps I’ve somehow accidentally turned them off. If you’re reading this, pop over to the website and leave a comment yourself, so I know everything is working.
Not a Super Bowl Post
It’s just after noon and I’m sitting at a Chinese restaurant. I didn’t get to go to my usual place yesterday where I like to sit, sample the buffet, and read. So instead, I’m at a different place today. I’ve sampled the buffet, and now I’m about to settle down and do some work on a synopsis. At some point, there may be additional buffet sampling. Also email reading and other cat-waxing because I really hate hate hate working on this synopsis (as demonstrated by it being days overdue)*.
I’ve been invited to a SuperBowl party, but I’ll probably pass because a) I really don’t give much of a damn about football, b) I can catch the commercials online tomorrow, and c) I need to finish this damn synopsis!
*Also, the restaurant provides complimentary wifi.
Thinking about Reno
![]() |
The fine folks over at Renovation (the 69th World Science Fiction Convention, happening in Reno, Nevada next August) have released their list of Program Participants.
I am pleased to report that I am on that list, and I am looking forward to being on panels and such at the convention, and doing my best to entertain and occasionally say something clever and/or interesting. Special notice to agents and publishers who will be in attendance: Get to know me! Ahem. |

I’m still going through edits, and I came across something that sparked a bit of cat waxing. Thus:
I have personal affection and high regard for the writing team of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Also, SRM Publisher very generously lent support and encouragement in the form of publishing my chapbooks when the Amazing Conroy was just starting out. And too, I’m a huge fan of the Liaden Universe books.
That’s why there’s a bottle of “blusharie” in a dream scene in my first novel, Buffalito Destiny.
It’s also why I’m telling you that there’s a reference to “advertency” in my new novel, Buffalito Contingency. Of course, if you haven’t read Lee & Miller’s Fledgling then this doesn’t make much sense. Nevermind.
Excuse me now, I need to get back to the edits before my publisher reads my blog and realizes I’ve been slacking off.
Icy Revisions

Wednesday is my day off from the Day Job, and today it looks like I’ll be spending it at home because freezing rain has left a very pretty and pretty dangerous layer of ice on everything.
This suits me just fine as last night my editor gifted me with his revision notes for Buffalito Contingency and that should keep me busy throughout the early part of the day. At least until the temperature warms up and some of the ice melts.
The rest of you, play safe!
