Philcon 2015

November is here, and this time around it’s a three-convention month for me. The first of these, the World Fantasy Convention, has come and gone. Next up is Philcon, running from the 20th to the 22nd.

I have a fairly light schedule, the highlight of which will be my reading featuring chapter two from Barsk. I read this for the first time last weekend at WFC, and I have to tell you it was the single best reading that I have ever done!. So, if you missed it, join me at Philcon and we’ll see if it gets better the second time around.

Here’s my full schedule:

Saturday, November 21sr
10:00 – 11:00 a.m. (Autograph Table) Signing
Bring me something to scrawl my name on. Novels. Magazines. Small children. My signature is yours to command.

12:00 – 12:30p.m. (Executive Suite 623) Reading
As promised above, I’ll read from chapter two of Barsk. Meet the protagonist, Jorl, and hear him talk to his dead friend, Arlo. Yeah, that’s right, Arlo’s dead. Not a problem.

01:00 – 02:00 p.m. (Plaza IV) Using Language Creatively
From Hemingway’s spareness to Lovecraftian atmospheric density to Chandleresque similes, there are a variety of ways language can be used to enhance the worlds you write. How do language and syntax choices affect the way a story is perceived?
with A.T. Greenblatt (M), Christie Meierz, Joseph Berenato, L Hunter Cassells

Sunday, November 22nd
01:00 – 02:00 p.m. (Plaza III) The Uses of Time Travel
Why do you want to travel into the past or future? Knowledge? Loot? Talking yourself out of bad decisions? Setting up the best prank ever? If given the opportunity would you, or wouldn’t you?
with Lawrence Kramer (M), Michael A. Ventrella, John Ashmead, Michael L. Brachman, JJ Brannon

Also, on Saturday night, I’ll be hosting a party for the San Marino in 2019 Worldcon Bid. Check out the link, support the bid, and come to the party to celebrate the many incredible authors who have been nominated for the Campbell Award. Eat cake! Be audacious! And never, ever settle for just a city.

See you at Philcon!

ChessieCon 2015

As mentioned four weeks ago, I’ll be spending the post-Thanksgiving weekend in Timonium, MD attending Chessiecon.

My schedule has changed a bit from the initial posting, but you’ve still got a month to put the following particulars into your calendar if you’re determined to stalk me there (and I hope you are). Here’s the shiny new version of what I’ll be doing, where and when during the con:

Friday, November 27th
3:00 p.m. (Greenspring 2) Alien Language Q&A, Led by The Klingon Guy
Aliens. How can authors better walk the tightrope between making them sound understandable while at the same time keeping their language, well, alien. Lawrence M. Schoen, author, former professor of psycholingustics, and founder of the Klingon Language Institute, will help you make some sense of it all..

Saturday, November 28th
10:00 a.m. (Greenspring 2) Reading
To no one’s surprise, I’ll read from my forthcoming novel, Barsk

11:15 a.m. (Atrium) Signing
This is your chance to have me sign all the things! Seriously, all of them!

6:45 p.m. (Atrium) Mass Signing
Authors, artists, and musicians gather in one room for signing/book-selling/chatting with fans. This is your chance to have me sign all the things you didn’t have me sign earlier in the day!
with Ursula Vernon, Steve Kozeniewski, TJ Perkins, Cathy Hird, Heather Rose Jones, Intisar Khanani, Kim Headlee, Cristin Kist, Jeff Gritman, Tamora Pierce, Steve Haug, Margaret Carter, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, D.C. McLaughlin, Mary Fan, C.S. (Celia) Friedman, Tom Smith, Roberta Rogow, Harrison Demchick, Karen MacLeod, Seanan McGuire, Charles Butler, Vonnie Winslow Crist, Kelly A. Harmon

Sunday, November 29th
10:00 a.m. (Chesapeake 6) KaffeeKlatch
Sign up for this intimate chat and ask me all the stuff. We’ll talk about Life and Death, Klingon, Hypnosis, Language, and anything else you want. And, if I can convince my publisher, there’ll even be prizes!

1:45 p.m. (Greenspring 1) How Much Do I Worry About My Own Canon?
Writing a series? Sure, you don’t want to get major things wrong, or contradict yourself. But are you creating a work of art for which you have to bend the rules sometimes — or even do so deliberately, for effect, as M. John Harrison does in his Viriconium stories? Or is our increased awareness, through the internet, of fan readers, their concerns and reactions (and their attempts to write coherent fanfic) boxing us in? As major franchises mess with their Canon, what about us writers?
with Harrison Demchick, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Don Sakers (M), Steve Kozeniewski

This convention marks the one-month-to-launch date for Barsk. So, yeah, I’m more than a little excited.”

See you at Chessiecon!

ChessieCon 2015

For the last few years, I’ve spent late November in Los Angeles, but I have different plans this year. Instead, hot on the heels of Thanksgiving, I’ll be traveling to Timonium, MD and making my first-ever visit to Chessiecon.

I’m looking forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces as well as many new ones. This convention weekend also represents the one month mark before the release of Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard, so I’m likely to be a little bit anxious.

In any case, here’s my tentative schedule of what I’ll be doing, where and when, at the convention:

Friday, November 27th
3:00 p.m. (Greenspring 2) The Klingon Guy Talks About Alien Languages
The title pretty much says it all. They’re giving me a room and an hour to answer your questions about the creation and use of alien languages in fiction and elswhere. Come on by for some linguistic fun and games.

Saturday, November 28th
10:00 a.m. (Greenspring 1) Reading
To no one’s surprise, I’ll like read from my forthcoming novel, Barsk

11:15 a.m. (Atrium) Signing
This is your chance to have me sign all the things! Seriously, all of them!

Writing a series? Sure, you don’t want to get major things wrong, or contradict yourself. But are you creating a work of art for which you have to bend the rules sometimes—or even do so deliberately, for effect, as M. John Harrison does in ringing the changes in his Viriconium stories? Or is our increased awareness, through the internet, of fan readers, their concerns and reactions (and their attempts to write coherent fanfic) boxing us in? As major franchises mess with their Canon, what about us writers?

I have to say, that looks like a pretty good way for me to round out the Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you’ll come out and say “hi!”

See you at Chessiecon!

Baltimore Book Festival

After the chaos and joy and travail of transportation that marked last month’s Worldcon, I’ve been resting up and recovering. But all too soon I’ll be on the road again.

The first event in what is shaping up to be a busy autumn takes place in nearby Baltimore. From September 25 through the 27th, the city will be celebrating a book festival in their inner harbor with lots of great genre authors showing up (including such fine folks as Anatoly Belilovsky, Tobias Buckell, Brenda Clough, Scott Edelman, Anna Kashina, Emmie Mears, Sarah Pinsker, Cat Rambo, Alan Smale, Michael R. Underwood, and Fran Wilde).

There will be panels, readings, signings galore, and even a chance for you to meet and greet many of the authors.

I’ll only be in attendance on Saturday, the 26th. Here’s where you’ll be able to find me:

Saturday, September 26th
3:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Reading Group 4
Four intrepid readers will transport you to other planets and magical lands, all without you leaving the comfort of your chair.
With Cinda Chima, Kelly Harmon, and Justina Ireland.

4:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Signing
I’ll have a limited number of free Advanced Reader Copies of Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard to sign and give away, so come on by!
With Kelly Harmon, and Justina Ireland.

5:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Earl Grey, Hot: Future Food, Fantastical Food
From food pills to food printers to the latest in Elven lembas bread, the panelists will whet your appetite for fictional food.
With K Ceres, Diana Peterfreund, Cat Rambo, Bud Sparhawk, and Fran Wilde.

6:00 p.m. (SFWA Tent) Meet the Authors!
Rub elbows with your new favorite science fiction and fantasy authors at this annual event!

And of course all weekend long under the SFWA Tent, you’ll find lots of writers, local and regional, published and self-published authors, all talking about their books.

See you in Balitmore!

My pretty-much-final Sasquan (aka 74th WorldCon) Schedule

Sasquan

This summer I’ll be heading to glorious (or so the travel brochures asure me) Spokane, WA to partake in the 74th WorldCon, affectionately known as Sasquan.

And, in case you’d like to stalk me, here’s my full schedule:

Wednesday, August 19th
12:00 – 12:45 (Bays 111B) Comfort Reading
What do you read when you just want to relax? What books do you return to during busy times to unwind? What are your book equivalents of meatloaf and macaroni and cheese?
with Jason Hough, Louise Marley (M), Christie Meierz, and Jo Walton.

Thursday, August 20th
09:00 – 09:45 (Breezeway/Statue) Stroll with the Stars
A gentle morning stroll with some of your favorite authors, artists and editors. Meeting each morning at 9AM in the Breezeway between the INB Theater and the Convention Center (check your map), and returning in time for 10AM programming.
with David Gerrold, Vonda N. McIntyre, Cat Rambo, Stephen Segal, Stu Segal (M), and Tom Smith.

11:00 – 11:45 (401C) Klingon Language Workshop
An interactive (i.e., barking and spitting) session aimed at beginners. In 45 minutes I’ll run you through about 80% of Klingon grammar and leave you with the ability to speak and comprehend hundreds of well-formed sentences, including useful things to say throughout the rest of the convention!
this is my one-man show event, but any Klingon fans are welcome to help with crowd control, random and senseless martial discipline, and passing out instructional sheets.

12:30 – 13:00 (303B) Reading
The convention has generously given me 20 minutes to read to you. Come and listen to the first chapter of Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard. You too can be part of the groundswell for this shiny new book, and maybe even leave with an autographed copy of an ARC!
me plus an invocation of anthropomorphic elephants (and a few others, but hey, no pre-convention spoilers).

14:00 – 14:45 (202B-KK4) Kaffee Klatche
Somewhere there will be a sign-up sheet where you can put your name down to join me for light banter, inspiring pontification, rude jokes in Klingon, and the inevitable bloviation. Spaces are limited.
me and nine lucky souls!

Friday, August 21st
09:00 – 10:45 (Location is Secret!) Codex Worldcon Breakfast
As I try to do every year when I’m at the Worldcon, I’ll be attending the annual Codex Writers’ Breakfast. As of this writing, we’re looking at 60 participants. That’s a lot of waffles
The list of attendees is known to Codexii and their guests, sorry.

12:00 – 12:45 (Conference Theater 110) The Future of Food
Science fiction rarely discusses what people will eat in the future. Denny Zager and Rick Evans’ 1969 hit song, “In the Year 2525,” predicted “Everything you think, do and say is in the pill you took today.” Will the future really replace barbecue and burgers with capsules and protein drinks? How far can nutriceuticals go? Will we print our food in 3-D or carve it from Chicken Little? How are cuisines and tastes evolving? What drives food trends?
with Beth Cato, Scott Edelman, Amy Thomson, Fran Wilde.

13:00 – 13:45 (Exhibit Hall B) Autographing
Sasquan has thoughtfully set aside forty-five minutes for my annual ego-deflation. Come by and help me name the crickets.
with Aliette de Bodard, P. C. Hodgell, Richard Kadrey, Devon Monk, and Michelle Sagara.

Saturday, August 22nd
12:00 – 12:45 (Conference Theater 110) Alien Linguistics
Science fiction and fantasy often deals with alien or constructed languages. What makes a convincing language? What can we learn about creating such languages from the diversity of human languages?
with Annalee Flower Horne, David Peterson (M), Julia Smith, and Stanley Schmidt.

13:00 – 15:00 (300B) SFWA Business Meeting
It’s everyone’s favorite time to see how they make the sausage. Also, meet the new SFWA Board!
with a cast of dozens!

Sunday, August 23rd
09:00 – 09:45 (Breezeway/Statue) Stroll with the Stars
If you missed coming along on Thursday morning, this is your chance! Same route, different strollers. Meeting in the Breezeway between the INB Theater and the Convention Center (check your map), and returning in time for 10AM programming.
with Laura Anne Gilman, Joe Haldeman, Gay Haldeman, Stephen Segal, Stu Segal (M), and Steven Silver.

That’s pretty much it. At this point, it’s not clear if there will or will not be a San Marino Worldcon Bid Party (but if there is, it will be Saturday night — unless, um, it’s not).

See you in Richmond!

Boskone 52 Schedule (more than a month out!)

Bucking the trend of recent conventions, this morning I received an email from the programming people at Boskone revealing what they referred to as my “final schedule,” and including a note that the full schedule is up on their website

I am agog!

Not just because lately it’s been much more common to get my schedule in the final week before the con (and often much less), but because of the incredible array of authors who will be showing up at the convention, folks like Elizabeth Bear, Charlie Stross, Karl Schroeder, Allen Steele, Carrie Vaugh, Walter Jon Williams, and many more. And, it certainly doesn’t hurt that Steven Brust is their GoH, as I am a long time fan and collector of his work.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s my schedule:

Friday, February 13th
3:00 p.m. – 3:50 p.m. | Burroughs | Food in Fiction
Stories that make you go, “Yum!” How do you describe food to convey mood or set the scene? Join our panelists as they dish on the culinary delights that tantalize us in fiction, from regional teas to kingly feasts. What works? What doesn’t? And what should you know about a food-centric scene?
with Carrie Cuinn (M), Steven Brust, James Cambias, Fran Wilde, and me!

4:00 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. | Galleria-Kaffeeklatsch 2 | Kaffeeklatsch
Let’s talk about psychology, linguistics, Klingon, hypnosis, small press publishing, award nominations, my forthcoming book from Tor, or whatever else you want to ask me about as we enjoy coffee, tea, or in my case a Diet Cokeâ„¢. Sign-up is required at Program Ops in the Galleria, but I’m sure we can fit you in.

Saturday, February 14th
10:00 a.m. – 10:25 a.m. | Independence | – Reading
I’ll likely read from my new novel, Barsk: The Elephants Graveyard, unless people would rather hear a bit from my recent Amazing Conroy novella, Calendrical Regression. Either way, come on by, show me some love, on this cold Valentine’s Day morning (sniffle, cuz my wife is back in Philadelphia).

2:00 p.m. – 2:50 p.m. | Galleria-Autographing | – Autographing
This is your chance to bring stuff for me to sign! I know, it’s exciting!
with M.L. Brennan, Daniel M. Kimmel, and me!

5:00 p.m. – 5:50 p.m. | Burroughs | – Rejectomancy
Is there really a blue sheet of death? Does an encouraging form letter mean less or more than a generic personalized response? These are just a few of the questions that new writers ponder as they try to read between the lines of the rejection letters they receive. Every new writer goes through this dreaded stage (better known as “rejectomancy”) as they try to glean some hidden meaning within the text. Writers who have been there share their own rejectomancy stories and give some helpful advice on ways to avoid the “rejectomancy” trap.
with Stephen P. Kelner (M), Craig Shaw Gardner, James Patrick Kelly, Margaret Ronald, and me!

And of course, Barry will be on hand to pose for photos with you. See you in Boston!

Loscon 2014 Schedule (three days out)

As I write this, I’m relaxing in a hotel in Laguna Woods, California. I arrived yesterday, and I’ll be here through Thanksgiving. On Friday morning I’ll drive back toward LAX and drop off my rental car, but instead of flying home I will check into the nearby Marriott and pick up my badge as a panelist for Loscon 41.

I reached out to them a bit late, but they very graciously found a few things for me to do. Come find me at the following:

Saturday, November 29th
5:30 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. | Atlanta | You Did What?
A panel in which each panelist starts a story and ends by dumping the next panelist into it!
with Kenn Bates, Buzz Dixon, Neo Edmund, Todd McCaffrey, Jerry Pournelle, Martin Young, and me!

Sunday, November 30th
1:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. | Saint Louis | – A Shot Rang Out
Improvised storytelling under pressure of time and madness. See us invent stories and characters too bizarre for fiction just so we can set up random lines the audience picked for us.
with
Sarah Adams, Buzz Dixon, Todd McCaffrey, David Miller, Larry Niven, True Thomas, Martin Young, and me!

Barry’s staying at home for this trip, but I will have copies of the new Amazing Conroy novel with me.

Philcon 2014 Schedule (six days out)

Philcon

As I write this, Philcon, the world’s longest running SF convention, is a mere six days away. And today, a little before 2pm, I received my schedule. The lead time is less than ideal, but we’ve all seen worse in past years and other cons, and besides there’s no point grousing. Instead, let’s talk about where you can find me and what I’ll be doing next weekend!

Friday, November 21st
9:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. | Party Floor (room to be determined) | Launch Party
Barbara E. Hill, the force behind NobleFusion Press, is throwing a launch party for the release of my new Amazing Conroy novella, “Calendrical Regression.” You should come by.

Saturday, November 22nd

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Autograph Table | Signing
I’ll be sitting alongside Howard Wilson, handing out postcards for a free novella, signing such things as you bring me, and yammering with whoever comes by.

5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.| Executive Suite 623 | Reading
In a reprise of last year’s phenomenal event, I’ll be sharing a reading slot with the brilliant Fran Wilde. And please, no flash photography (seriously!)

9:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. | Party Floor (same as last night) | San Marino in 2019 Worldcon Bid Party
Why settle for a city when you can have an entire country? That’s right, the most serene republic of San Marino is the site of a Worldcon bid and this is the first party. Support the bid and come away with a free ebook!

Sunday, November 23rd
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Crystal Ballroom Two | – Language, Thought, and Understanding
Science fiction stories that address language and linguistics include Embassytown and Babel 17, among many others. Language is obviously going to be a crucial factor when contacting an alien species, and all kinds of interesting questions come up, such as, could there be alien languages that could never be understood by humans (or vice versa) and how much does language shape thought/psychology (and vice versa)
with Rebecca Robare, Bernie Mojzes, Mark Mandel, and me wearing my friendly moderator hat.

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. | Plaza II | – Creating Believable Aliens
How Does a Writer create convincing extraterrestrial characters who are not just humans with funny make-up, but are clearly the product of a different environment and evolutionary history? How do you show an alien that can think as well as a man, but differently.
with Steve Miller (mod), Jack McDevitt, Tom Purdom, James L. Cambias and me.

And if that’s not enough for you, Barry will also be around (when he’s not sleeping) to pose for photographs with you.
