The Door to the Basement

My wife and I are both collectors, which is a polite way of saying we have a lot of crap.

Fortunately, our house has an enormous basement, which we’ve found is the ideal place to put the crap. And, because we rarely go down there, it’s easy to forget about all that stuff for months at a time.

Normally, Gej faithfully follows me around the house. That’s as it should be, it’s what dogs do. He’s happy and eager to accompany me to the kitchen, to my office, to the bathroom, to the library, anywhere at all, except to the basement. On those rare occasions when I need to retrieve something from that dark abyss, Gej will not follow. I can leave the door open, I can call his name, I can cajole him with tasty doggie treats, but he won’t come downstairs.

Ever.

Instead, he’ll lay down on the floor in front of the door, blocking the exit, and wait.

Good boy.

This photo is from back on December 1st, 2010, but it’s still one of my favorites (it’s been the background screen on my phone ever since). Gej was about 15 months old and determined to show off his dexterity by peeing with both left legs in the air.

Now that’s a talented dog!

In my home we have a banquet that runs along the half-wall separating the living room from the kitchen. It sits behind the kitchen table, which has chairs on its other side. Gej likes to slumber on the banquet, hidden from view at nearly every angle by either the wall or the table.

I typically come into the house through a side door that leads into the kitchen from a mud room. Gej can hear me when I come in, but he will continue to lay upon the banquet until we become visible to one another. Then he will leap up and rush to the edge and assume this position so that he can receive his welcome-home ear-scritchings.

I’m not allowed to continue deeper into the house without performing this sacred obligation.

Rituals are important to dogs. Also to their people.

Happy Thursday!

Gej – The Power of the Bone

What is it about dogs and bones?

It’s pretty obvious that I spoil my dog, and so there are bones like this one all over the house. There’s no meat left on any of them (okay, so sometimes I stuff redbarnâ„¢ treats into one, just to keep him on his toes). And yet, the little guy will happily gnaw on a bone for quite a while before moving on to some other more pressing task (like licking himself or taking a nap). Still, I suppose that’s better than him chewing on my stuff.

As my wife will tell you, I’m always working. Which is another way of saying that I never sleep in. Well, almost never.

Captured for posterity is this rare image of me sleeping in on a Saturday morning (I think it’s all of eight o’clock).

And making sure that no one interrupts my slumber is my faithful dog, Gej.

Man’s best friend. Believe it!

Happy Thursday!

Being a writer isn’t all about sitting in front of a keyboard (gee, I hope my publisher is reading this). No, indeed. Some of my most productive time is when I’m laying back on my hammock. I let my eyes close, and the gentle swaying eases my mind into a wonderfully hypnogogic state, and the creativity unwinds throughout my thoughts.

At such times, it’s a good thing to have a faithful hound around, keeping me safe from any distractions (pesky bunnies!) that might interrupt the creative process. Yeah, that’s my story, and I’m sticking with it.

Having a dog again has made me very happy. I like having Gej in my life.

Ergo, it only follows that having a bit of Gej in your life (via this blog) will make you happy too.

No need to thank me, just marvel at how I caught this excellent photo of my dog at the eyes-closed, tongue-stretch-perfect moment of his yawn, while he was sitting on me, while I was laying on my hammock, arm outstretched and blinding wielding the camera app on my phone.

Yeah, you should be impressed!

Happy Thursday!

It occurs to me that I’ve been selfish.

Now that Spring has more or less sprung, I’ve been able to enjoy more of the simple pleasures in life. For me, that means relaxing on my hammock with my dog, Gej.

I should be sharing these moments with you, so you can experience them vicariously and appreciate them right along with me.

Gej seems to like hanging out there too.

Happy Thursday!
