Eating Authors: Allen Steele

My guest this week is Hugo Award winner Allen Steele, whom I last saw in Reno when he, his wife, and I were all having breakfast on that fateful morning when would go on to win his third rocketship. What I find particularly endearing, is that two of the three have been for Best Novella.

Although he has his share of stand alone novels, Allen is probably best known for his Near Space series (including Orbital Decay, Clarke County, Space, Lunar Descent, Labyrinth of Night, and A King of Infinite Space) and his Coyote series (Coyote, Coyote Rising, Coyote Frontier, Coyote Horizon, and Coyote Destiny). Not surprisingly, Allen also excels at shorter lengths, and many of these stories have been gathered into collections such as Rude Astronauts, All-American Alien Boy, Sex and Violence in Zero-G: The Complete “Near Space” Stories, American Beauty, and The Last Science Fiction Writer.

His latest novel, Hex, branches out from his Coyote Federation in an exciting new direction that will appeal to long-time fans as well as new readers. Trust me, it’s good stuff!

Welcome to another installment of asking authors about their favorite meals. This feature was inspired by my protagonist, the Amazing Conroy, who in addition to being a stage hypnotist is also very much a foodie.

This week, we hear from David Mack. Although he’s probably best known for his Star Trek novels, David has also written for television, film, magazines, newspapers, comic books, computer games, radio, and the Internet. His first work of original fiction, The Calling came out in 2009. His newest offering, Star Trek: Rise Like Lions comes out this week.

This week we’re visited by Gail Z. Martin. I’ve been running into Gail at conventions for years. She’s the author of The Chronicles of The Necromancer series (The Summoner, The Blood King, Dark Haven, and Dark Lady’s Chosen). Her latest book is The Sworn, the first volume in The Fallen Kings Cycle, to be followed by book two, The Dread, next February.

Gail’s interviewed me several times now for her popular podcast, Ghost in the Machine. It seemed pretty obvious to return the favor, and put her on the spot about her best meal, particularly with Thanksgiving just around the corner.

Peadar Ó. Guilín

Welcome back to another installment of asking authors about their favorite meals. This feature was inspired by my protagonist, the Amazing Conroy, who in addition to being a stage hypnotist is also very much a foodie.

Today we break bread with Peadar Ó. Guilín who I had the pleasure of meeting last August as a co-panelist during the WorldCon. Peadar’s first novel, The Inferior, was published in 2007 and has been described as “a stark, dark tale, written with great energy and confidence and some arresting reflections on human nature.” In the coming year, Peadar expects to see it translated into eight languages, including Japanese and Korean. His second novel, The Deserter, will be published in May in the UK.

Hey there, welcome to another installment of asking authors about their favorite meals, a weekly feature inspired by my protagonist, the Amazing Conroy, who in addition to being a stage hypnotist is also very much a foodie.

This week, we hear from J. A. Pitts. I got to work with John last summer during the World Science Fiction Convention in Reno, Nevada, where we both did a bit of “paying it forward” and took a turn in Renovation’s writers’ workshop. I’d specifically asked to be on the team with him because I was a big fan of his first novel, Black Blade Blues. The sequel, Honeyed Words, was just as compelling (I finished while recovering from the convention), and I’m going to be hard-pressed to wait until next summer for the third volume, Forged in Fire. Oh, and those stunning covers by Don Dos Santos don’t hurt either.

Time once again for brief chat with another author as she tells us about her most memorable meal. Our guest this week is Elizabeth Bear, winner of the Campbell Award for Best New Writer back in 2005, and she hasn’t slowed down, taking home the Locus Award for Best First Novel for Hammered (the first book in The Jenny Casey Trilogy), and a Gaylactic Spectrum Award for The Stratford Man, the two volume third book in her series The Promethean Age (Ink and Steel, and Hell and Earth), as well as two Hugos and a Sturgeon Award for her shorter fiction.

Elizabeth has been incredibly prolific, churning out not merely numerous novels, but numerous series of novels. In addition to the two already mentioned, there’s the Jacob’s Ladder Trilogy (Dust, Chill, and Grail), The Iskryne Series co-written with Sarah Monette (A Companion to Wolves, The Tempering of Men, and An Apprentice to Elves due in 2013), her New Amsterdam series (New Amsterdam, Seven for a Secret, and The White City), and The Edda of Burdens (All the Windwracked Stars, By the Mountain Bound, and The Sea thy Mistress), the last of which comes out tomorrow as a mass-market paperback!

This week, we hear from Aliette de Bodard. If you’re not acquainted with Aliette, you’ve been missing out. She’s a past winner of Writers of the Future, as well as the BSFA Award for Best Short Fiction. She’s been nominated for the Campbell Award, the Hugo Award, and the Nebula Award. When it comes to novels, she’s been dazzling readers with her series of Aztec Mystery Fantasies, which begins with Servant of the Underworld, and Harbinger of the Storm, and continues with Master of the House of Darts, due out in a bit over on November 3rd. She lives in Paris, France, but every now and then I manage to catch up with at a convention in the U.S.

Welcome to another installment of asking authors about their favorite meals. This feature was inspired by my protagonist, the Amazing Conroy, who in addition to being a stage hypnotist is also very much a foodie.

This week we visit with Jennifer Stevenson. Although she probably doesn’t realize it, Jennifer is responsible for putting me on my very first panel, back around 1990 or so. And, soon after, in the opening months of the KLI, gave me space on a local Chicago convention for the first bit of Klingon language programming (which exploded like none of us ever imagined).

Since then, Jennifer has moved from SMOF to Pro, with a number of fun (and at times, magical) romantic comedies, carving out her own niche with titles like Trash Sex Magic, and her trio of Chicago Urban Fantasies (The Brass Bed, The Velvet Chair, and The Bearskin Rug). It’s been more than a decade since we broke bread together (a pot luck at her home, with Rosemary and Gene Wolfe on hand), but she seemed like a good person to talk to about meals.
