Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

Thank you for joining me for another Replacement Proverb Thursday. In case you’ve forgotten, Replacement Proverbs are short phrases to use when you’ve slipped up and need to quickly restore your honor (or just get the other people to stop staring at you). Simply deliver a Replacement Proverb and all will be well. What could be simpler?

This is today’s Replacement Proverb:

reH latlh qabDaq qul tuj law’ Hoch tuj puS
the fire is always hotter on someone else’s face

This particular phrase is often better understood by non-Klingons than some of the others. You can think of it as a thin metaphor, the heat of embarassment on your face over your actions, with a dash of sympathy thrown in because we’ve all been there. On the other hand, given the nature of Klingons, it wouldn’t surprise me if the origins of this Replacement Proverb were actually quite literal. We’ll probably never know the truth. Meanwhile, here’s what we do know: qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
