Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

If it’s Wednesday that means it’s question word day. Today’s word is ’Iv. Apostrophe, Capital I, V. ’Iv means who? Much as we saw with nuq, to ask a question with who simply put ’Iv in the location where the answer will be. The following examples will show you what I mean.

Hoch yaj ’Iv
who understands everything?

’Iv DaqIp
whom did you hit?

’Ivmo’ mabomnIS
we need to sing because of whom?

You have dozens of nouns and verbs at your beck and call. You know many many leftovers. You know how to ask most questions. And you can build complex strings of conversation on a wide range of topics. So go ahead. Do it now. The worlds ahead of you won’t open themselves, they need a bit of help from you and language. qo’mey poSmoH Hol

Sweet Potato Pie
Today’s podcast is brought to you by Sweet Potato Pie, a collection of wonder and delight by Lawrence M. Schoen.

“Sweet Potato Pie” [is] weird and wonderful and will dig into you more with its strangeness than with its deep meaning, but as most stories don’t get a hold at all, that’s just fine.

— Matthew M. Foster, Tangent

Lawrence Schoen’s “The Amulet of Winter” is at the top level a quite entertaining story.

— Rich Horton, Fantasy Magazine

“The Sky’s the Limit” is the perfect mixture of humor and suspense.

— Sherwood Smith, author of the Inda series

Worth noting is also that ‘Iv – like all pronomial chuvmey – can act as both a noun and a verb.

SoSlI’ ghaH ‘Iv’e’? = SoSlI’ ‘Iv?

Shhh! We haven’t done pronouns yet.

I’ve been saving them for next month.

DopDaq qul yIchenmoH QobDI’ ghu’!

‘Iv crops up in my favourite retort to a trivial comment: SaH ‘Iv? (“Who cares?”)

It also means who’s there?, and thus can serve as the perfect answer (either way) when someone is knocking at your door.

{{{:-)

A timely point I’d also like to make – today, November 23rd, is the anniversary of the first broadcast of a venerable British science fiction TV series, whose Klingon name would be “‘Iv Qel.”

“Doctor Who.”
