Let’s end the month with a new noun. How about Dat. Capital D, A, T. Dat means everywhere.
This is actually your introduction to how Klingon handles locations. In English, we would typically make use of prepositional phrases to talk about where something is (e.g., in the bar, on the bridge, above the targ). Of course, Klingon doesn’t have prepositions, so that option is out. Instead, we make use of various specialized nouns, and often do so in conjunction with one or two Type 5 noun suffixes (none of which we’ve talked about yet). Dat is one of the nouns that doesn’t require a locative noun suffix. Some examples should make this clearer:
Dat Dab novpu’
aliens live everywhere
Dat romulusnganpu’ wIHoH
we kill Romulans everywhere
Dat paqmey Datu’laH
you can find books everywhere
You might be a bit surprised to have an extra noun in these sentences, nouns that are neither subjects nor objects. This is another example of different languages using different ideas (or worlds, if you prefer). In English, you wouldn’t be confused to see a noun that wasn’t the subject or object if it was part of a prepositional phrase. In Klingon, nouns that describe placement in space (locatives) are separate from the subject and object. This may be a new way of looking at things for you, but it won’t be the last. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.

Back to the qep’a’: This year, we’ll be splitting the conference into two parts: Part One will be the usual blend of fellowship, curse warfare, singing, story-telling, and assorted language challenges as we’ve enjoyed for the past seventeen years, and will run from Sunday through Monday. We’ll begin in a meeting room at the Hyatt Place Reno-Tahoe Airport Hotel for Sunday and Monday, and on Tuesday morning we’ll move to larger function space over at Reno’s convention center (courtesy of Renovation, the 69th World Science Fiction Convention). Part Two will begin at noon on Tuesday, and consist of various introductory lessons and explanations intended for newbies, beginners, and visitors dressed in Federation pajamas (or other noncombatants). Klingon grammarians will be on hand to help newcomers (not to be confused with linguistic “fresh meat!”) learn the basics of Klingon and use it to chat, sing, play games, and insult one another.
