Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.
Opening the pages of Marc Okrand’s Klingon for the Galactic Traveler is always exciting, sometimes dangerous, and at times even funny. In the spirit of that last possibility, I give you today’s choice: the verb qID. Lowercase Q, Capital I, Capital D. qID means joke or tell a joke. This word is essential before you venture into the famous comedy clubs on Kronos:
bIqIDchugh DuHoH be’nalwI’
if you tell a joke, my wife will kill you
pIj qID nov ‘ach wIvoqbe’
the alien frequently jokes, but we don’t trust it
jIqIDlaHbe’mo’ bangwI’ vISeymoHbe’
because I cannot tell a joke, I don’t excite my beloved
Now you have a choice to make. Will you talk about telling jokes in Klingon, or will you perhaps actually tell jokes in Klingon, or rather will you simply joke about Klingon but do it in Klingon? Any of these choices will result in your use of the language and take you to new places, new experiences, new worlds. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
