Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

Well, it’s Prefix Day again, and by my count we only have four left. That makes today’s the preantepenultimate prefix. Or something like that. Anyway, today’s verb prefix is che-. CH, E. Use che- when the subject is second person plural, or you, youse guys, y’all, and the object is first person plural, or us. Like so:

chevoqbe’
y’all don’t trust us

cheSuvchugh ghaytan reHoH
if youse guys fight us, likely we’ll kill you

bIrmo’ qa’vIn cheQoylaHbe’
because the coffee is cold, you cannot hear us

(Okay, I’m not quite sure what the context of that last example is, but you get the point of how to use the prefix, and that’s what’s important.)

What I want you to ask yourself now is, how would it feel if you could use all the prefixes we’ve discussed fluidly, switching effortlessly between all the combinations of person and number for subject and object, without having to give it any thought. It may seem impossible, but in fact it’s really just a matter of practice and repetition. It takes time, and for some people, it takes a lot of time. But you’re in it for the duration, so time’s not an issue. Every prefix you master, every combination you make your own, is another bit of language proficiency, another world opening up for you. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
