Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.
We’ve spent a lot of Thursdays together, and by now you’ve surely realized how critical suffixes are to Klingon. They’re the secret to your success with the language. The more thoroughly you know your suffixes, the more skilled you will be with the language. So, let’s learn a new one, shall we?
-pa’ is another Type 9 verb suffix, and like the others it is incredibly powerful. –pa’ means before. That’s P, A. Apostrophe. –pa’. A few examples will illustrate it’s versatility.
chom DaHoHpa’ jabwI’ DaHoHnIS
before you kill the bartender, you need to kill the waiter
tach Datu’laHpa’ bI’ojlaHbe’
before you can find the bar you cannot be thirsty
megh vISopchugh meghlIj DaSoppa’ ‘uQ DaSopDI’ jIghungqa’
if I eat lunch before you eat your lunch, when you eat dinner I will be hungry again
I could tell you that you need to practice this suffix day and night, but I won’t. At this stage, you don’t need me to tell you anything. You’ve already decided how often to work on the language, how strong your commitment is, how much time you’ll put in. And I know it’s not a trivial amount, because you’re here now, listening to this podcast. You’ve already decided that you want to possess this language, to let it open worlds for you. And so it shall. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
