Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

You’ve been patiently waiting for another exciting chuvmey so I won’t torment you with further delay. Today’s word is qen. Lowercase Q, E, N. qen means recently or a short time ago. That’s right, this is another leftover which will let you comment on the temporal aspect of your sentence. And to think, you were worried about Klingon not having tense.

qen SeychoH nov
recently the alien became excited

qen HeghDI’ vavlI’ nargh romuluSngan
a short time ago, when your father died, the Romulan escaped

qen chechqa’ chom ‘ach nIteb jItlhutlh
recently the bartender was drunk again but I drank alone

You probably already know many ways to use this new word. You’re probably thinking of some of them right now. But I don’t want you to just think about them. I want you to say them out loud. And when you’ve finished, I want you to say still more. Thinking isn’t what opens those worlds, my friend, it’s all about language. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
