Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

It’s Friday, which means another exciting visit to Klingon for the Galactic Traveler. Today’s choice is particularly exciting because this verb was actually first heard at one of the Klingon Language Institute’s annual summer conferences, and yours truly was the first person observed to do the verb, which in itself is somewhat ironic.

The verb is veb. V, E, B. veb means to be next as in a series or sequence. It’s a fun word. Let’s try it out.

yIveb
next!

chaq nIvebmoH
perhaps they caused you to be next

DaH be’nI’lI’ vIHoHrup ‘ach tugh bIvebchoH
now I’m ready to kill your sister but soon you will be next

tlhulthmeH vebnIS romuluSngan HIq
for drinking, the Romulan ale needs to be next

You can use veb most anywhere, because no matter what you’re doing now there’s always going to be something happening next. This is true of most everything, and certainly true of the many worlds that language opens. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.

Also, vebHa’ is sometimes used to mean “previous”, as there is no canonical word for this.
