Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

Once again we’re going to dip into the vocabulary found in Marc Okrand’s Klingon for the Galactic Traveler. Today’s word is the verb ‘up. Apostrophe, U, P. ‘up means be unsavory, or be disgusting, or be repugnant, or be icky. What fun! Let’s try it out.

megh ‘up law’ nIQ ‘up puS
lunch is ickier than breakfast

‘upnISbe’ romuluSngan HIq
Romulan ale does not need to be repugnant

‘upchugh Dargh yItlhulthrup
if the tea is unsavory, be ready to drink it

SoSlI’ chatlh ‘upbe’ ‘ach vI’eplaHbe’
your mother’s soup is not disgusting but I cannot eat it

You don’t have to be fluent in Klingon to know when something is unappetizing, but it doesn’t hurt. The experienced galactic traveler knows that a bad meal can close off many an opportunity, almost as surely as language opens worlds. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
