Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.
Today’s noun is qa’ which means spirit. That’s lowercase Q, A, Apostrophe. This is spirit in the metaphysical sense, and not a synonym for “pep.”
This seems like a good day to give you a couple bonus nouns.
yab means mind or brain. Y, A, B. yab
tIq means heart. T, Capital I, lowercase Q. tIq
And finally, qIvon is a body part, but exactly what body part is unclear to us. There’s been wild speculation on the topic, but either Maltz is too polite to explain, or is having too much fun at our confusion.
romuluSngan qIvon DatlhapDI’ maHagh
when you took the Romulan’s qIvon we laughed
chom tIq mev betleHlIj
your bat’leth stopped the bartenders heart
SoSlI’ vIHoH ‘ach SoSlI’ qa’ vIHoHbe’
I killed your mother, but I didn’t kill your mother’s spirit
ngIjDI’ yablIj qa’vIn DatlhutlhnIS
when your mind is unruly, you need to drink coffee
HeghwI’ qa’ vIvoqrupbe’
I’m not ready to trust the deceased’s spirit
I like that we’ve begun to get metaphysical, something you probably never imagined you’d be doing in Klingon. Will you go back through your vocabulary and see how you can use qa’ with all you’ve already learned, or will you let it slip in bit by bit over time? Either way, you’ve turned a corner, or if you prefer, the language has opened another world for you. It does that you know. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
