Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.
I’m in the mood for some nouns. How about you? The Klingon language focuses on verbs, but languages like English are all about nouns. Nouns are the stuff of life for us. The word for life in Klingon is yIn. Y, Capital I, N. yIn.
There’s honor in nouns. In fact, the word honor is another noun you should know. It’s batlh. You’ve already seen this word as a leftover, meaning with honor or honorably, but you can also use it as a noun.
tugh ngIjchoH yInlIj
soon your life will become unruly
jItlhutlhDI’ chom batlh vIvoqnIS
when I drink, I need to trust the bartender’s honor
romuluSngan yIn vItlhap ‘ach batlhlIj tlhapqa’
I took the Romulan’s life, but he took your honor again
Nouns. You’re able to understand them, because they’re all around you. You’re able to master them, because you understand them. That’s how it works, bit by bit, one concept and word at a time, and soon, you’ve got a whole language and you’re using it to open new worlds. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
