Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

We’re out of suffixes, but we have plenty of Thursdays left in the year. So, for the month of December we’ll be using this day of the week to talk about Replacement Proverbs. These short phrases are used when a language warrior has committed some slight gaffe or faux pas, and seeks to quickly redress his or her honor. If spoken with sincerity, which is to say, convincingly, honor is restored. Keep in mind, Replacement Proverbs are not apologies, rather they are highly ritualized utterances for acknowledging that we all slip up from time to time.

Here then is your first Replacement Proverb:

DopDaq qul yIchenmoH QobDI’ ghu’
set fire on the side when there is danger

Practice this phrase until it falls trippingly off your tongue. You’ll need it, in case you actually trip. And in the meantime, remember, qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
