Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

Today’s verb suffix is the fourth and final member of the Type known as rovers. It’s –Ha’. Capital H, A, Apostrophe. –Ha’ changes the meaning of a verb to indicate that the action or state is somehow off, that it’s been mis-performed or is un-done. This is not the same as saying the action or state of the verb has not occurred; that would involve the use of the negating rover –be’. As such, most translations of verbs with –Ha’ will carry the English prefix mis- or un- or dis-. In other instances, another word entirely might be more appropriate.

Further complicating things for this rover is that fact that it doesn’t rove. Instead, in all cases, it occurs immediately after the verb itself, before any and all other verb suffixes. As always, a few examples will help:

Qe’Daq jI’elDI’ monHa’ HoD
when I entered the restaurant, the captain frowned

bIwIvHa’chugh manarghlaHbe’
if you mischoose, we won’t be able to escape

motlh mIl’oDmey wIvoqHa’
usually we distrust sabre bears

jItujbe’ ‘ej jIbIrbe’ ‘ach jIbIrHa’bej ‘ej ghaytan jItujHa’
I’m not hot and I’m not cold, but I’m certainly uncold and likely unhot

Shakespeare once said, “If a thing can be done, it can be better undone. And if it can be undone, twere better it were misdone, and soonest.” Of course, he said it in Klingon, and he used the –Ha’ suffix to do it. And if ever there was someone who understood about language opening worlds, it was him. So, if it’s good enough for Shakespeare, what’s holding you back? qo’mey poSmoH Hol.

Today’s podcast is brought to you by Buffalito Contingency by Lawrence M. Schoen.

Conroy has left Earth far behind and taken his hypnosis act beyond Human Space.

It should be show business as usual, except for the energy being the size of a hundred suns that wants to study him, a plot to smuggle liquid gravity, a troupe of alien sex wrestlers, a hypnotized ghost, and Reggie his buffalito stuck in a saurian toilet…

“If you like hilarity along with your mayhem, or perhaps mayhem with your hilarity, then Buffalito Contingency was written with you in mind.”

— Walter Jon Williams, Nebula award-winning author

Buffalito Contingency‘s aliens were so alien I reveled in my humanity, and the humans were so human I resolved to revel in the moment. But the book was so entertaining that humanity and the moment took a walk while I finished a really good read.”

— Howard Tayler, Hugo-nominated cartoonist & author
