Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

Admit it, you love Thursdays because you know that’s the day you’re going to get another suffix from me. The mystery is, you don’t know if it will be another verb suffix, or another noun suffix. Today, with one short syllable, you’re going to get both!

-mo‘ means because or due to. M, O, Apostrophe. –mo’ is both a Type 5 noun suffix, and a Type 9 verb suffix. When it is attached to a noun, it tells you that the circumstances are what they are because of some thing (i.e., a noun). When it is attached to a verb, it tells you that you’re in the situation you’re in because of some action or state of being (i.e. a verb). It may sound a bit confusing, but fortunately, we have some sample sentences to clear it all up:

chommo’ HIq Datlhutlh
you drank the ale because of the bartender

chom vIHoHmo’ tach wImejnIS
because I killed the bartender, we need to leave the tavern

yatlhqa’ HoD loDnI’lI’mo’
the captain is pregnant again, due to your brother

bIchechmo’ bISuvlaHpa’ nIQ DaSopnIS
because you are drunk, before you can fight, you need to eat breakfast

I’m wondering if you appreciate what a powerful suffix you now have to play with. Now you can attribute responsibility for any act or thing, and this makes possible tens of thousands of new phrases you can use. Now I don’t expect you to use them all today, but if you wanted to, you could. If you wanted to, you could use language to open worlds. Because that’s what language does. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
