And today I have a special treat for you, another of the extremely powerful Type 9 verb suffixes. You’re going to get a lot of use out of this one. The suffix is –meH. M, E, Capital H. –meH is what we might think of as a “purpose clause marker.” It means for, or for the purpose of, or in order to. Basically, it turns its verb into a reason for whatever noun or verb it precedes. It can be tricky stuff, but fortunately, I’m going to give you plenty of examples:
vavlI’ vIHoHmeH vISuvchoH
for the purpose of killing your father, I began to fight him
rut nIQ DaSopmeH jabwI’ Datu’nIS
sometimes in order for you to eat breakfast, you need to find a waiter
reH tlhutlhmeH HIq wImaS
we always prefer liquor for drinking
romuluSngan yu’meH be’nI’ betleH vIvoq
I trust the sister’s bat’leth for questioning the Romulan
A person may found the –meH clause particularly useful, because it expands what can be said in a single sentence. This is turn lets you use more vocabulary and link your ideas together into more cohesive strings of words. Think of it as building keys to unlock doors.
