Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

Are you still reeling from all of yesterday’s limb vocabulary? There’s a good possibility, I think. It’s a shame we don’t have a way of expressing that whole maybe-yes-maybe-no thing. Oh, wait, we do.

chaq means perhaps. CH, A, Lowercase Q. chaq

And because it’s Wednesday, you know that this word is a leftover. It works like the other chuvmey we’ve seen. Basically, you prop it up at the front of the sentence you want to express uncertainty over. Like so:

chaq charbe’ ‘uQ
perhaps dinner won’t be slimy

chaq vavlI’ rur puqlI’
perhaps your child will resemble your father

chaq vItlutlhDI’ jIchechchoH
perhaps as soon as I drink it I will become drunk

I’m a big fan of chaq. I like being able to cast uncertain statements out into the void. Speaking a language isn’t always about being sure of yourself. You can speak and be wrong, because language isn’t about being right, it’s just about expressing yourself. Congratulations, you’ve discovered a whole new world that language has opened. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
