Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

Today we’re going to talk about a very helpful verb suffix. It’s laH, a Type 5 suffix that expresses capability. laH, L, A, Capital H.

Adding laH to any verb takes a statement about performing some action or expressing some state and transforms it into a statement about the ability to perform that action or express that state. Compare the following examples:

qaHoHbe’
I don’t kill you

qaHoHlaHbe’
I cannot kill you

qaHoHbe’laH
I can not kill you

jIghung
I’m hungry

jIghunglaH
I can be hungry

jIghungqa’laH
I can be hungry again

And of course, you can combine verbs with laH to make more complicated sentences:

nIteb jItlhutlhDI’ jIchechchoHlaHbe’
when I drink alone, I cannot become drunk

tugh be’nI’lI’ vISuchlaH ‘ach nov DaSuchnISbe’
soon I will be able to visit your sister, but you don’t need to visit the alien

I think you can see the possibilities that are opening up for you here. Maybe you’ll go back through all the verbs we’ve covered, and explore what you’re now capable of doing and being. Maybe you’ll see this as an opportunity to take the next step, and use more of the language in your life, to describe things you do every day. Maybe you’ll let it open up some new worlds for you, because that’s what languages do. qo’mey poSmoH Hol.
