Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language. I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen.

It’s the start of a brand new week, so let’s begin with a couple more verb prefiexes.

Today I want to introduce you to Su- and bo-. That’s Capital S, U, Su- and B, O, bo-

Both of these prefixes have the same number and person in the subject: You (plural). So any time the subject is second person plural, any time you have two or more of you, or youse guys or y’all as the subject, you might be using one of these prefixes.

I say “might” because it all depends on object of the verb. Remember, prefixes tell us about the person and the number of both the subject and the object.

If the subject is second person plural and there isn’t an object, the prefix is Su-

Suchech
y’all are drunk

SuHoHnISchoH
youse guys need to start killing

tugh SuSuvrupqa’
soon you (pl) will be ready to fight again

Su’epDI’ HagH SoSlI’
when y’all eat, your mother laughs

That’s pretty clear. But what do you do when the verb does have an object, and that object is third person? That’s when you would use bo-. And the nice thing about bo- is that it’s used regardless of whether that third person object is singular (he / she / it) or plural (them).

botlhutlh
y’all drank it

chom boHoHnISchoH
youse guys need to start killing the bartender

tugh romuluSngan boSuvrupqa’
soon you (pl) will be ready to fight the Romulan again

chatlh bo’epDI’ HagH SoSlI’
when y’all eat soup, your mother laughs

It’s easy to use these prefixes, is it not? Very simple, and matter of fact. Keep practicing them and soon you’ll agree qo’mey poSmoH Hol language opens worlds.
