I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen and today is Saturday, February 5th, 2011, and you’ve survived yet another week of Daily Klingon instruction. To celebrate, here’s your proverb for the week:
bImejDI’ reH betleHlIj yItlhap
never leave without your bat’lath!
While this is good advice in general, what I want to draw your attention to here is the nonliteral translation of this proverb.
You know the word for never, it’s not. That word isn’t in this proverb. Instead, we’re using the word reH always. A more literal translation of this proverb might be
when you leave, always take your bat’lath!
There’s some subtle distinctions here that could probably be part of someone’s dissertation on the differences between Federation and Klingon psychology as manifested in their respective languages. Why does the English translation stress the negative, stressing what you shouldn’t do, while the Klingon gives you strong encouragement to do the right thing. But that’s a topic for a different podcast.
You may not know if this is a proverb is good advice, but consider that the betleH in question here could be symbolic.
