Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language.

I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen and today is Friday, February 4th, 2011, which means we get to set aside Marc Okrand’s classic book, The Klingon Dictionary, and instead open up Klingon for the Galactic Traveler and give you an extra special word.

Today’s word is ‘ep which means eat, but is used specifically for foods which have a large liquid component, such as chatlh soup, and yet it would be inappropriate to use the verb tlhutlh drink for these kinds of foods. The more general verb for eat is Sop.

‘ep is spelled Apostrophe, E, P. ‘ep

chatlh soup is CH, A, TLH. chatlh

and Sop eat is Captial S, O, P. Sop

You’re now ready to eat and drink. Let me get you started with a few sample sentences:

not ghem Sop SuvwI’
a warrior never eats a midnight snack

chatlh wI’eprup ‘ach HIq Datlhutlhqa’
we are ready to eat soup, but you are drinking liquor again

tlhutlhnISqa’DI’ chom mamejchoH
when the bartender needs to drink again, we will start to leave

You don’t have to have to learn the words from Klingon for the Galactic Traveler in order to become conversational in Klingon. You don’t’ have to ever eat soup to have a rich and fulfilling life. But let’s be clear, I’m not advocating you never have soup. I’m just suggesting you have choices to make. You already know the one I’m in favor of: qo’mey poSmoH Hol, Language Opens Worlds.
