Hello, and welcome. You’re listening to DaHjaj Hol, your daily dose of Klingon language.

I’m your host, Lawrence Schoen and today is Saturday, January 29th, 2011, which means you’ve earned yourself another proverb to round out your week. Here it is:

nIteb SuvnIS DevwI’
a leader must stand alone

This is a nice illustration of how the verb suffix –wI’ can really expand your vocabulary, potentially turning all the verbs you know into nouns. Try making up some proverbs of your own, using verbs + –wI’ for the subject, and putting –nIS on the verb to indicate their need to do or be that verb. For example:

tlhutlhnIS chechwI’
the drunk needs to drink

reH tInnIS ngIjwI’
the rowdy one always needs to be big

There are lots of possibilities here, and one might, you know, see this as an opportunity to build up fluency and proficiency without a lot of extra effort. Just something to think about, as you consider that qo’mey poSmoH Hol, Language Opens Worlds.
